Bought an X9000 and 4GB of RAM recently so opened up the 14.1" T61 and installed them. Motherboard was a 42W7872 Penryn type as expected and the T8300 had a Lenovo FRU so the repair was probably done by professionals.

There was no pad between the heat sink and the Northbridge chip just paste which I redid.

Wifi card was a BGN type with 3 antenna wires, removed the modem. Will upgrade wifi to a lower power type next time I open it.

It works, cleaned the fan but it still has a groan sound, not sure if this fan would work in the Frankenpad but I'll need the best I can get with the X9000 - open to suggestions. I know that there are threads but it can get confusing. I don't mind mixing parts to get the best possible cooling.

X9000 runs already hot enough in a 15" T60 chassis, so overheating in a 14.1" machine is rather thinkable...

I'd like to be able to kick the X9000 up to 3.0 GHz but I want all the power management stuff to still work, like down clocking with a light load. Is there a simple app that runs at startup to just kick up the multiplier but leave everything else enabled?

May I ask why, since you're intent on throwing an X9000 in there? I'd be looking into the card that maintains the best speed/connectivity, not the one that saves power when you already have the hungriest CPU imaginable as a part of the equation...

As you have probably noticed, since you are also on the Toughbook forum and from my sig, I have about 5 laptops and I don't use this for anything other than getting it ready for the transplant. The fan works, it just occasionally makes a minor noise. I'm still looking into the best fan for the final product - thanks.

By the way, I just started using a Dell D830 with T9300, win7 64, SSD that I bought for the processor since the entire computer was not much more than a processor alone. I've been using it for 2 months or so just to see if the performance is good enough and I was going to swap the CPU into the Frankenpad, then thought why bother and bought the X9000 instead. It is a lot like a wide T61 if you ask me since it is Santa Rosa chip set based. It is actually in very nice condition.

Trying to answer my own question about heat sinks, this thread is very informative but I don't know if the part numbers apply to Intel graphics MB. Given how well his worked I might just upgrade the graphics (new MB) down the road so it would be nice to have a heatsink setup that works either way - not have to do it twice: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=105114

There are quite a few T61p heatsinks around $10 or less on ebay, and I notice some differences, here's a link to a picture, warning it is large: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/2EMAAOSwH ... -l1600.jpg

It is interesting that on some, with the same part number, the heat pipes, especially the one from the graphics area do not extend all the way to the far end of the rear fin area. I believe that the longer pipe in the above picture is an improvement and I'm buying that one. Also, noticed one where the small pipe from the processor was significantly shorter, at least half an inch, than shown in the above picture.

This picture is from the heat sink thread and the differences in heat pipe length that I'm seeing in pictures of the same T61p (42W2028 ) heat sinks are very similar to the difference between the center, T61p and right T500 heat sinks - warning large pic: http://www.e30tuner.com/assist/frankenp ... _hs002.jpg

From what I know of thermo and heat sink design the thin metal shroud around the fan, while made of copper or some alloy (an excellent heat conductor) it is not thick enough to spread the heat out efficiently (thermal resistance is linearly related to cross sectional area) so it is important to have the heat pipes deliver heat across the fin area. The forced air and fins are what take the heat out after all. I'd say that the long pipe version is the best.

I'm surprised that the thick pipe from the processor doesn't go fully across both fin areas on any of these heat sinks perhaps they didn't do it so that the processor would not hog the cooling?

Along this line of thinking it can be seen that the T500 heat sink on the right has the side fin area cooling everything with all the pipes there but only the processor pipes extend to the rear area reserving those fins mainly for the processor. Still, the thick processor pipe should be the one extending fully across the back. I still like the center one better since the most copper makes the most efficient use of the fin area and will simply get the heat out of the case.

Finally built this in the 15" T60 chassis so that I can upgrade it to Win 10
for free and have it in the MS database as activated.
New old stock motherboard from TuuS with nVidia - flashed to Middleton
X9000 processor
8 GB Samsung RAM
Adata SP550 480GB SSD

Tried the AzureWave ABGN AC card but it would not boot or go into BIOS,
it froze at the Thinkvantage screen - used an Intel 5300 that I had.
I had bought several heat sinks to try, put in the best looking one forgot to
write down the model number - it is very quiet.

Did a Lenovo OEM Win 7 install, backing it up now, then will update to Win 10
and backup again. Started the Win 10 upgrade at 2:30 AM July 30 which was
still within the July 29th midnight window by Pacific time. It was going very
slowly so I went to bed and was able to finish it in the morning after the time
limit.
Already did my alternate motherboard with Intel graphics, win 7 and Win 10
backed up.
Good thing the free update goes until 3 AM Eastern time!

I need a better display, this one is dim and not UXGA.

OK, this system currently has a 15" 1400X1050 display, and I'm planning to put in
a BOE Hydis HV150UX1-100 can I reuse the cable from the old display?

I didn't flash EDID on my QXGA screen.
Used in a T60 it had black screen during POST/BIOS, and perfect picture after Windows had loaded.
Used with a T61 motherboard it works perfect all the time.

I had no need for BIOS changes. This was in my spare T60, just for fun. It is easy to swap panels or complete lids on T60-generation laptops.

Has anyone tried an IDtech N150U3-L06 (1600x1200) LCD in a Frankenpad with
the original T60 video cable? Is it likely safe to try, don't want to ruin a nice
motherboard?

I don't know if it was exactly this panel, but I did have an ID-Tech UXGA (from a T42) in a T61 Frankenpad and it worked without problems. The pinout in the datasheet for the N150U3-L06 is the same as that of the other panels used in the T60, so that panel should work too if it has an EDID chip with valid panel parameters.

I think it is hit or miss, tried the BOE Hydis HV150UX1-101 without EDID update
and it booted all the way to Win 7 but the display was black the entire time.
Probably need to update EDID.
First time I've done this, here is the current EDID data, I take it that I just flash
it to a known working HV150UX1-100 data set?
