Cheapest 64-bit CPU for the T60?
Cheapest 64-bit CPU for the T60?
I recently got a used T60 off eBay for $15 because the case was broken in the corner due to it being dropped. It works perfectly fine and I'm happy with it however it was fitted with a 1.8 GHz Core Duo that doesn't support 64-bit at all. Very strange CPU that I didn't even know existed.
I'd like to replace it with some 64-bit CPU. I tried fitting in the P8600 from my T400 but it does not POST with it. Does anyone know what CPU will work that is cheap? Any CPU that has 64-bit instruction sets will do.
These CPU's are old enough that they should be just about worthless, but yet all I found on eBay was about $45-$100.
Cheers.

The following Core 2 Duo CPUs work on the T60:
Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66GHz)
Core 2 Duo T5600 (1.83GHz)
Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz)
Core 2 Duo T7400 (2.16GHz)
Core 2 Duo T7600 (2.33GHz)
T7200 is usually the fastest you can get cheaply.

Check out www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T60 and the CPU tables listed at www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2_Duo_(Merom) for compatible CPU variants.
Best bang for the buck is usually a T7200 CPU. They can usually be had cheaper in eBay if you look out for a *broken* T60 with non-functional mainboard or even only screen, while still containing such or an even better CPU along with some additional spare RAM modules.

Unfortunately that is my problem. I am overseas and although I can get mail forwarded to me from my US address, heavy packages are extremely expensive. My rates for just an empty box already start at $15.rumbero wrote:Check out www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T60 and the CPU tables listed at www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2_Duo_(Merom) for compatible CPU variants.

Anyways thanks guys. The scavenger hunt for a T7200 begins!

I'd strongly suggest posting a WTB (want to buy) ad in the forum's Marketplace. It's very likely that someone will come to your rescue...ReCreate wrote:The scavenger hunt for a T7200 begins!
