RAM error

I fitted an ebay sourced 1gb stick of ram yesterday. I got some strange results : When in the top slot there were no problems, when in the lower slot it gave a beep error code but not the usual 1-3-3-1 it was 1-4-1-1 which is not listed in the HMM.
I put it into another T60 and it did not misbehave so that is where I have left it for the moment.
Anyone any explanation for this misbehaviour ?
The label says the following :
HYS64T128021HDL-35-B
1GB 2RX8 PC2 5300S 555 12EO

Your bottom slot might be flaky. Does it accept other DIMMs without complaining?

Yes it might be but other ram works there without complaint, I should have mentioned that. Any idea about the unlisted beep error as that might be a clue ?

Aaah, OK so the 1 4 1 1 beep sequence is known.
Still a bit strange that the mobo is working fine with any stick of ram in the lower slot except my recently acquired one.

I would be curious to know if there might be a micro-fracture in one of the solder joints for the RAM housing.
It's possible that a minor dimension difference in the RAM (length, width, thickness at the contact points, ect..) might put enough stress on the assembly to break contact at the fracture and cause the failure.
If you have the equipment and skill, try reflowing the solder joints.
