"Solved"-New Board: T60-61P Fnpad Win8.1 64bit display error & recovering ...
Hello all,
I spent most of these holidays reinstalling my Frankenpad (due to MS faulty updates and their consequences) ... And I did switch to Windows 8.1 64bit from 32bit. Now - while installing - I ran into graphics problems: It tends to randomly crash the display-driver, going black, recovering while saying that the display driver stop responding and recovered.
It looks like starting during the installation process, in fact after the first install, not having updated the machine, I did not experience such blackouts. But before changing to Windows 8.1, after most of those endless undates, the machine begins to Blackout.
I did not find a driver (Nvidia) that did stop that, reverting up to now has not been of any help. same for the Monitor file (UXGA) of my led-display (UXGA). Any advice should be welcome ...
have a happy, a peaceful and a successful New Year!!

started with IBM-XT (80186) and AST-Ascentias NB (910N) in the 90ties, relying on Thinkpads (770X, A31Ps) until 2012,
now using an upgraded T60-61P "Frankenpad" (15"UXGA-LED Penryn 8GB 500GB/7200), and an X201/X230T (i7 8/16GB/500GB) Windows10

nVidia GPU failure is always a risk but if this symptom appeared immediately after changing the OS I would suspect you have a driver problem. I never allow windows updates to install drivers on laptops unless I don't have another option. You can get nVidia drivers from thinkpads.com that are official lenovo drivers updated in 2012. Try removing your current drivers and trying those.
You can also try booting from a Linux live CD, this is the easiest way to test if it's hardware or software problem, if you get the same symptoms runing linux it's most likely hardware, if it runs stable under linux it's most likely software. This isn't 100% but it's a fast and simple test and won't require changing anything on your harddrive, in fact you won't even need a harddrive installed to test.
ps. I'd recommend getting one of the NOS boards with 2010 gpu either way, they will be sold out soon and odds are slim there will ever be any more.

Apart from agreeing with excellent advice that you already got from TuuS, I have a question...
Do you recall which drivers *exactly* have you tested with?friedrich-eugen wrote:

The very same wishes are going your way.have a happy, a peaceful and a successful New Year!!

Hello ajkua66,
Thanks for Your kind reply.
Indeed I do suspect drivers rather than hardware.
So I'll try sorting out which drivers will possibly change the behaviour.
My first reinstall had been started overwriting the 32bit installation. It took very long, as my Internet connection although 4G is relatively slow in downloading gb of updates... Experiencing these graphic errors, I reverted to an installation from scratch... Another two days...
It was during those two processes that I noted, that only late in installing Windows 8pro those blackouts started...
I tried to find different (older) monitor files and different and updated nvidiasoftware (332.50? Seems not to be the latest, but v 34x.xx did not do trick the first time)
I'll use a more accurate access to pin my actions down and report on them
T'll then
(from my Xperia z)

This is the driver that I installed on the most recent FrankenPad I had owned, but that machine was running w7 64 Pro. The driver itself is the same, though:
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 0141/en-us
My own T61 sports this one - again, W7 Pro 64 - but it shouldn't make a difference:
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 1137/en-us
Good luck.

Re: "Solved"-New Board (?!): T60-61P Fnpad Win8.1 64bit display error & recovering ...
Hello,
May be that NVidia-driver-problems/failure to work properly does accelerate the deterioration of Board and GPU?
I experienced while reinstalling my wifes Frankenpad (Windows 8.1/32bit) that practically all drivers produced systematic problems (driver shut down & restart) while Windows stayed on, open ... It is only now, that the last update for those quadro FX570M has stopped this...( for how long will stay indefinite...)
I 'm inclined to see the burden of failing drivers with NVidia. They should do more to protect their standing and peoples Investments ...
