T60 w/ external display - no luck with Extended Screen
I'm working with a T60 w/ x1300 graphics running Windows XP. I connected a flat screen lcd display to the vga out on the laptop, but I'm not sure what I'm getting. The screen appears to extend onto the attached display, but nothing can be moved to this area. The mouse cursor will move over there, but only occasionally. I would be happy if I could just duplicate the laptop's screen content as the other display is plenty big enough. but extending the screen seems to be the only option.
Anyone else dealt with this?

Try Fn+F7, or install Presentation Director and let it manage the display schemes. You can also right click the desktop, go into "Properties" and play with the resolution and screen settings there.

Re: T60 w/ external display - no luck with Extended Screen
I installed Presentation Manager, and I'm able to set the screens up just as I wanted them.
One curious thing, though. I have set up the two screens as extended. I'm able to put the applications right where I want them, and they work fine, but I notice that fn =f7 doesn't cycle through anymore. I haven't changed things back to duplicate mode to see if fn f7 works again, but maybe I'll try that tomorrow.
Anyway thanks for the help.

Once presentation manager is installed, it takes over Fn+F7. You can change what it does in the program settings (cycling is one of the options).
