bios: 2.27 (latest)
embeded controler; 1.07
system unit s/n: 2008PRL3PL82
system board s/n: VFOSV77H255
chipset: i945 rev.03
southbridge: 82801GHM (ICH7-M/U) rev. B0

After instaling new cpu laptop wont run. it starts, but the screen is all black (no bios screen, no lenovo welcome screen). fan not working. i cant go to bios, or do anything.

Welcome to the forum!

That's exactly the same swap as I did in the T60 I'm typing this on. This swap should be so straight forward that I would almost suggest your 7200 CPU might be defective. I'm not aware that this upgrade should require any particular when it comes to BIOS or EMC. Have you pulled this CPU from a known working unit somewhere, or did you buy it?

Maybe try to install it one more time, where you put special care into installing it correctly. If it still doesn't work, I would contact who ever sold it to you.

I'm sure you have checked the basics like whether the CPU has some obvious damage or any bent or missing pins.

Cpu i working, it has even some 3 months warranty.
It has no visibile damages.
I have done everything right. Put new thermal paste on it.
I tried to make it 3 times, each time the same thing happened - that means nothing.
Is it possible that my mainboard/chipset doesnt support this cpu?

To my knowledge: No. Judging from the posts I have read here, this is a much used upgrade on these machines, as this particular CPU was (is) a good combination of performance, heat and price. And I don't remember having ever seen anything about incompatibility issues.

If there really are versions of T60 motherboards that don't support a T7200, I am sure others have experiences on it, and might chime in with some additional information here.

Nah, you got a bad CPU, that's all.
Any T60 mobo can take a T7200/T7400/T7600.

You may want to check the BIOS, if it's still from ca. 10 years ago, then perhaps... (but I doubt that).

You sure? There is a lot of tutorials, opinions, descriptions saying that T60 can be upgraded to T7 series cpu.
Bios 2.27 (latest) 25-04-2011

ps. You propose uuse some old Bios to run this upgrade? why? was something blocked in new revisions?

Back when the T60 was new people were saying that you need a revision 3 motherboard to be able to upgrade to Core 2 Duo. You can check the revision in the CPU-Z utility.

I have never ever seen or heard of any T60 motherboard that was not revision 3, but you can check, just to be sure.

BIOS-wise, nothing was blocked. I am running a T7200 on 2.27, as do many many many others.

Other than just, I have to join the others and assume the chip is defective. It's rare, but happens.

As it is writen at the begining of topic thoe are spec for my mainboard from cpu-z program:

chipset: i945 rev.03
southbridge: 82801GHM (ICH7-M/U) rev. B0

New CPU doesnt have any visible damages, it looks brand new to be honest.

Sorry, missed that.

Lots of defects in electronics can be invisible on the outside.

Short of trying the CPU in a different compatible machine, I see no way to be certain.

You earlier said that your new CPU has 3 months warrranty. Take it back and tell them that it doesn't work in a computer that every source indicate *should* work with this CPU. Have them prove that the CPU does in fact work or claim a refund.

Just done exactly this upgrade and had the same symptoms - until I upgraded the bios to the latest version after which it all started working.
And very nicely too.

Here's a real longshot-
Any chance you forgot to turn the locking screw above the socket after putting in your new cpu?

It happened to someone here years ago.

I just put a T7200 into one of my T60's (X1300 video) and it works fine with no BIOS update (started with the same T2400 you had as well).

Just for the sake of argument, unpluged the regular battery and the CMOS battery. Reset the whole system and see if it recognizes it.
