I'm now looking for a replacement planar for my T60. My is faulty so I decided to upgrade mine a little bit with fireGL and CPU from 7xxx instead of mine t5600 and ati x1400.
I read in few descriptions in ebay that buying only the planar without the bottom case will make it faulty because of some "security" in thinkpad.
Can anyone approve this or disapprove?
Is there a real problem when replacing the planar by removing old and faulty from the case and putting a working one ?

There are no connection or ties between the bottom case and the motherboard, except from the model number printed on the bottom case, which tells what the laptop's original specifications were. If you change the motherboard to one with different specs, as you obviously plan to do, the model number will no longer be representative of what's inside. In your case, I won't see this as a problem at all. Even if you worst case chose to sell it, and didn't tell the buyer that the board was changed, he would anyway get something that's better than the model number indicates.

Unless the descriptions you found are talking about something totally different. The only security issue that comes to mind is if a used board has BIOS password set, but that has nothing to do with the bottom case.

The only thing I can think of relating to getting a "security error" when changing motherboards is that there is a special chip that is used with some system data encryption tasks. In the T23, this chip was on a separate module that could be removed from the motherboard. If it was removed, the motherboard would essentially stop working. On systems newer than the T23, the chip is embedded on the motherboard. In either case, separating the motherboard from the bottom case would not cause any problems.

Actually T60 has security chip integrated with other functionalities (AT8356908) - for example SVP, and if you start playing with it an Error 176 may pop-up. But there's way to deal with it as with SVP .

So you saying that by replacing whole planar I can cause an error ? Is this chip somehow connected to the bottom case ?

I suspected that this talk about security chip could be confusing.

The answer is still no and no. The mentioned security chip in the T60, more precisely the TPM chip, has nothing to do with the bottom case. That's an integrated part of the motherboard.
