T60p - some cd's not readable , yet some are.

I have a T60p with problems reading cd roms. Some discs just don't read, nothing shows in Windows Explorer. Yet the same disc works in other computers. Other discs read just fine.
Doesn't matter if it's a commercially created cd, DVD , or disc burned from a computer.
My driver shows a Microsoft version from 2001, 5.1.2535.0
Device is MATSHITA DVD RAM UJ-842 z
Where do I start? I tried uninstalling and then rebooting same issue.

Given the age of the media drive I strongly suspect that a replacement is due...

I have a similar DVD-RAM Multi Recorder drive that has problems with CDs but not DVD media. The DVD-ROM CDRW drive has no problems with the same CD disks and occasionally I've had to swap them to read a CD. It also tends to fail when writing CDs.

These are all signs of failing optical drives. They don't typically stop working completely, but rather suddenly stop reading/writing certain disks, or get a higher percentage of "coasters".

I just physically removed the drive after shutdown. Rebooted w/o the drive. Then shutdown & re-installed the drive. Booted up and the drive works with all discs that previously did not work. No messages of "finding new hardware" etc.
Time will tell if that will last.
Haven't tried burning a disc yet.

George is right on track, given the age of the drive its hit or miss. I have multiple drives that do the same thing, I just put them in seldom used machines and place a post it note inside with a message to my future self, so it wont drive me crazy again. Once a year I get board and stumble on a buy it now for a few of the drives that is too hard to resist and buy them to replace my known problem children.
