Specs:
Model - 2008-CT0 (CPU-Z Says Mainboard is 2008UAB)
Intel Core Duo T2400 CPU
HyperX 120GB SSD
2GB DDR2 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 Graphics
I'm curious if I could (should) upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Duo. There's a lot of different ones it seems, it looks like Core 2 Duo is a lot more efficient for most programs and claims they use the same amount of power. Thanks.
CPU Upgradable? (2008-CT0)
Re: CPU Upgradable? (2008-CT0)
You can and it may be a good idea to get a 4MB cache C2D. A T7400 should be a good bang-for-the-buck in terms of what you can get it for, and the boost it will give your system. Other options are a T7200 (will be dirt-cheap, but a smaller upgrade) or a T7600 (top-of-the-line for a T60, and for that reason will cost more than its relative worth). Slower 2MB cache C2D are not worthy upgrades, if at all.

Increasing the RAM to 3GB would go well with a CPU upgrade.

Re: CPU Upgradable? (2008-CT0)
My first gut reaction was to recommend replacing the HDD by an SSD to speed up overall operations, but you already wisely did this. So your overall system should be much smoother in general, regardless of which CPU you use.gnawzie wrote:I'm curious if I could (should) upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Duo. Have a look at a CPU comparison to make an informed decision: cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core2-Duo-T7200-vs-Intel-Core-Duo-T2400. Not really a huge difference, but turning a T60 into a 64bit capable machine is probably already worth it, if you'd also upgrade the RAM to the addressable maximum of 3GB.
