Transfer UXGA from T60 ATI to T61GMA?

#1 Post by gnawzie » Wed Apr 15, 2015 5:26 am

Hi

I am wondering if its possible with relative ease to swap screens from a T60 to a T61 and if I need to do anything special like reprogram something or modify cables?

I mean if the UXGA is already working in a T60 I should be able to just plug it right into a T61 I hope?

There is no T61 with 15" 4x3 non-widescreen lid, so it won't fit in your lid (there is a 15" 4:3 R61 available in Europe).
But if you just want to try it, the LCD cable connects to any T61 motherboard without any problem, and no other changes are necessary.

Hi realblackstuff this is a 14" screen and from the images it looks like a 4:3, but I'm not sure.

If both machines are 14.1" 4:3 then it would work out of the box.
Even though they look different, you can (and should) put the whole T60 lid onto the T61.

That's a 14" non-widescreen (4:3) T61 machine.

You could - with a few mods - transplant the motherboard from it into your 15" T60 frame and build a FrankenPad.

Good luck.

As George says... this is what many people here on the forum (and elsewhere!) have been doing; moving ("transplanting") a motherboard from a 14.1" 4:3 T61 into a 15" 4:3 T60 frame/chassis, and hence retaining the use of a SXGA+ or an UXGA FlexView/IPS 15" 4:3 LCD on the resulting FrankenPad (sometimes designated a "T601"). To get a fast impression of what it takes to do this modification, see e.g the following guide (althought in German; use Google Translate to translate into English, if need be): Frankenpad – ThinkPad-Wiki.

If you are interested in this topic then please use the search-function or use Google (e.g. "frankenpad site:forum.thinkpads.com")... there is a LOT of information here on this forum!

Ah okay, the problem is both of them are 14.1 so I'm not sure what reason I would have to transplant a t61 motherboard into a t60 except maybe the body is tougher on the t60? I appreciate the suggestions and advice though :)

So there is no need to move mainboard from 14" chassis to another 14" chassis. Simple move complete lid assembly from T60 to T61 as RBS suggested. You can optionaly move keyboard bezel (to close some gap near the left hinge of T60 LID) from T60 to T61 too.
Pros:
T60 lid have better hinges
Cons:
T60 lid haven't roll cage (but it is completely made from Mg alloy)
T61 can have all antennas (3 WLAN + 2 WWAN) or can't;)

BTW
There is no factory UXGA (1600x1200) LCDs in 14" thinkpads. May be your T60 is SXGA+(1400x1050) and T61 is only XGA(1024x768)?

The 14.1" motherboards from the T60 and T61 are not drop-ins. You would have to file away at some of the points on the chassis of a T60 to fit a T61 motherboard in.

However, the 14.1" frame in the T60 feels slightly stiffer than in the 14.1" T61, probably since there are fewer holes drilled in the T60 frame to save weight.

A pic of it
That picture is of a 14.1" T60. Notice the CPU, a T2500, which is a 2.0GHz Core Duo.

I read "T7500" which would match 2.20 GHz that the BIOS screen shows - at least to my old eyes - in that unclear picture...along with "Core 2 Duo"...

Oh oops, misread. That's odd seeing a 14" 4:3 T61, though.

They're less common than their widescreen siblings, but far from a rare sighting.

Many have been cannibalized and turned into FrankenPads, though...
