Downclocking T60 with V5200 using Ati Tray Tools

#1 Post by serekzolty » Tue Apr 21, 2015 12:29 am

Hi there ;)
I'm trying to keep my machine as cool and quiet as possible. That's why I wanted to use Ati Tray Tools in order to downclock it, but I am encountering some problems.
I can change the clocks but if I go below 320MHZ on core the display becomes crap. It's unreadable and the more i downclock the wider it becomes. It is fine if I use Ati powerplay and it automatically downclocks itself to about 100 (something like that) MHZ, but it doesn't work all the time for me so I want to set the clocks by myself.Did anyone have similar problems ?
I am running a T60P with T7600, ATI V5200 and Win 7 32bit, using all the Lenovo newest drivers.

I am just gonna reply myself :)
I reinstalled ATI Drivers from Lenovo's site and disable Ati Powerplay and then it started working so now I'm down from stock clocks to 160 core and 100 memory, hence temperature went down from 66 idle to 62 idle.
Now just waitin for a T500 heatsink and hopefully my T60 will be completely silent :D

I put a T500 in my T60p recently; after extensive comparing against the original T60p cooler (the one with the longer GPU heatpipe) the results I got showed that the T500 heatsink hits 72C on load very easily when the original T60p would not... the T500 cooler seems to put pressure on the keyboard too. I have not tried the 2nd revision heatsink with the shorter heatpipe, nor have I rated the effects of the fans in each.

Here are all of the possible variables that have been discussed historically:
41V9932 with original fan
41V9932 with 41W6407's fan
41V9932 with T500's fan
41W6407 with original fan
41W6407 with T500's fan
T500 heatsink
41V9932 with copper shim
41W6407 with copper shim

There were also discussions about 41V9932 / 41W6407 being bent down low enough so that the copper makes direct contact with the die instead of a "thermal pillow". But I don't like this method because bending the heatpipe will affect the coolant inside.

There seems to be a lot of contradictory information about the T60p heatsinks and various ways to do it. So far there have been no conclusive facts, and none of the above mentioned combinations have all been tested simultaneously with the same conditions. I think the best solution would be an original T60p cooler and find a way to bypass the thermal pillows.

It would be nice to test all of these cooling systems and compare results with someone. If anyone has interest in helping out I might consider testing this as well (probably would be good to get a spare well used T60p for the job and not stress out any of my good units).

Cheers,

Unfortunatelly it started giving artifacts again after restart, but I have changed the heatsink to the T500's one and now when I set the TPFan Control Manually to level 1 the idle temps are:
T7600 CPU 45 C
GPU 59 C ( with Powerplay, could go lower but I cannot use Ati Tray Tools now ;( )

The Load temps, and by load I mean stressing with Prime 95

CPU 67-70 C (undervolted to 1.0875V)
GPU 70C
That's on manually set to level 7.It is a lot better when I have changed the heatsink, before the CPU would hit above 90C and GPU about 75-78.I just wish I had a solution for the ATT, then it would be even better.
The FRU for heatsink I have used is FRU 45N5492 45N5493, at least that's what ebay auction says.

Artifacts from the underclocking, or was the GPU giving artifacts before?

It's very interesting that you had such poor performance with the original T60 heatsinks; good to know, thanks!

Exactly artifacts from the underclocking. As soon as i go below 320MHZ on core the display's starting to streching itself and everything looks doubled (every window, text etc.), the GPU has never given artifacts before. With memory I can go down to 100MHZ.It's interesting, because Power Play keeps it lower and there are no artifacts at all.

Can anyone check how low can you downclock your ATI V5200 on your t60p's ? I just wonder whether is just my configuration that's making problems or it's just how it is. My limit is 320mhz

Hey in all of my T60/60p (I've 4 of those atm) units I can downclock my GPU to 110/120. I did some tries with 100/110 but this settings may provide some occasional artifacts.

What drivers are you using ? I am using the newest Lenovo drivers ver. 8.383.1.1000 (32 bit)
And what do you use to downclock, is it Ati Tool ?

Well I did used Ati Tray Tools aswell in cooperative with an default Lenovo drivers which you may download @ Thinkpads.com drivers section but for most of the time I used Xorg/radeon + rovclock combo under Linux.

For those of you who want to keep your machine cool I recommend changing the original wireless card.I know it's been told before but I am really surprised that changing a wi-fi card can have such an effect.

As I have mentioned before, I've had 45C CPU and 59C GPU idle on fan speed level 1.After changing my card to an Intel 5100 n speed,it went down to 39CPU and 54-55 GPU idle. It's either the card or some kind of magic. Now my laptop is even more cool, hence quieter :) If only I could downclock the GPU more, it would be completely silent all the time :)

On my T60 with T2400 and FireGL V5250 (!) my idle temps are about 43°C for the CPU and about 45°C for the GPU. I'm using Ubuntu 14.04. Additionally, I'm using the W500 heat sink, a thermal bridge for the south bridge and another thermal bridge from the GPU to the keyboard. The thermal paste on the CPU and GPU that I applied (Arctic MX4) is razor thin. The W500 heat sink makes the biggest difference though. Wireless card is an Intel 5100 by the way.

Can you describe these thermal bridges? Do you use thermal pads for that? And is the southbridge originally colled in any way? correct me if i am wrong but southbridge is this chip next to the gpu?

You can read up on a few mods in my T60 ATI guide. Should be a sticky. The Southbridge is next to the Northbridge. For the GPU thermal bridge I used thermal paste as well. I only use those stupid pads where it's absolutely necessary.
