T61P Third Mini PCI-E Port and Modem cable...

#1 Post by eru3 » Sun May 03, 2015 12:57 pm

Hello.

Few questions.

1. T61P has three mPCIE slots, one is not working for, in my case, 2nd wireless card. Why? It is the one next to the right side of CPU socket.
2. Modem cable has 3 connectors. One is the main supplying some sort of power to a)modem b)??? What is the second thing it supplies the power to? It connects to motherboard....
3. Modem and few other devices motherboard connection. What type of USB is this? I need a technical specs of it - I want to figure out what devices can I plug instead.

Thanks,
0.95V Nvidia Quadro FX 570M

Two of the three slots are for the WiFi card and the WWAN card (cell phone), that said with a hacked BIOS you can do all sorts of things with the WWAN slot including this:

The other is this:

And this, cracked out of the case

If I did it again it would be this

Could you please change links to other? These do not work for me: "item is not available or listing has been removed".

Which 2 are the WWAN and WiFi? I imagine the one on far right and one that is lowest?
The idea is to utilise the third one. I already have AC7260 intel and Broadcom Crystal HD thing, but I really would like to be able to use the third one.

I assume you have 15.4" T61p with nvidia?
Let's count miniPCIe slots from left to right
1 - leftmost (under CPU) - normally for WWAN, It have both USB and PCIe lanes - so can handle anything (Whitelist in BIOS can block some devices). LED signal is connected to WWAN led in LID
2 - to the right of video card - normally for WLAN. It haven't USB lanes - so it can handle only PCIe devices. Combodevices (like WiFi + Bluetooth will lost bluetooth cos it is USB device). LED signal is connected to WLAN led in LID.
3 - rightmost (on 15.4" models - or unsoldered slot in modem area on 14" 4:3 models) for half height cards. Normally for WUSB. Sometimes it is noted that it can accept turbo memory. But in times of T61 turbo memory cards were full size and normally was placed in slot #1. It have both USB and PCIe lanes - so can handle anything (Whitelist in BIOS can block some devices). I don't know where LED signal going to, but my gues that it is mixed with bluetooth LED in LID.

Modem is not USB device it is connected to HD Audio codec.

Modem cable have 2 connectors on mainboard. It is not for power but for phone line signals.
Leftmost (near the RJ11 connector) for that RJ11 connector;) Rightmost under the miniPCIe slot #2 - directly going to the docking connector. Dock have other RJ11 connector. I think that 2 connectors are simply interconnected in paralel.

BTW.
Why did you use CrystalHD decoder. Is nvidia can't handle HD movies?

Very good assumption. I have used Broadcom simply for power saving while playing the videos. I am planning to make it a quite mobile laptop at some point - replacing the battery cells to get greater capacitance. It seems that I could reach to 100Wh or a bit more. Anyway, thanks for the valuable answer :)

Nvidia of course can handly movies. Bluray in VLC Media Player(does not support Crystal HD) works well. Therefore it is perhaps a faulty mPCI-E card in my laptop, because it should work. Does usual Thinkpad wireless card require USB lanes?

BTW the led is wired to wifi too - it reacts to turning it on and off on my current slot(most to the right).

Also: why HWiNFO lists 3 mPCIe slots that do not exists, nothing is plugged to them. Yet they are hot-plug capable and and able to deliver 7.5W of power. Is that possible that there could be more mPCI-E slots in that laptop?

No. Normal WiFi cards PCI (for before T60 ThinkPads) and PCIe based. Some modern Thinkpads (T4(5)00+) can have WiFi + WiMax combo cards. And this combo cards use both PCIe (for WiFi) and USB (for WiMax)
I think that this is BIOS problem. Even with removed whitelist i can't use broadcom's AC adapter (BCM94352HMB). It simple don't want to boot up in WLAN slot, but works normally in WWAN slot. I haven't WUSB slot because i am on 14" 4:3 mainboard (Frankenpad). But Intel AC 7260 haven't any problems in WLAN slot (except 7260AC have bluetooth and it haven't worked but i didn't need it cos i have thinkpad bluetooth).

Yes T61 have more PCIe ports. One is the ExpressCard slot. It is simple combination of PCIe + USB + power lanes designed for hot plugging.
And one is routed to the dock. In advanced docking station there is normal PCIe slot and some thinkpadders place there external video cards. But this slot have only PCIe x1 speed:(

I have 3 unplugged and one for Ricoh Express Card. Do all three slots go to the docking port?

I am soon going to receive the QX9300 and 8GB RAM to start with the 1066FSB CPU mod, I am going to play with the mPCI-E cards as well. Going to let you know how it is going ;)
By the way does anyone know what type of cells are used in T61P 9-cell batteries? All identification symbols they have are these three sets:

1. 0KMM4ID
2. 076265
3. 60KMN1

I am wondering what are their exact properties.

AFAIK - only one port is going to the docking connector.
Ricoh (Ricoh R/RL/5C476(II) CardBus controller) is not ExpressCard controller. It is PCMCIA contoller an it ocupy 1 old PCI port. In card cage there are 2 slots - one for PCMCIA and one for ExpressCard.

I have 5 PCIe root ports from ICH8E (Windows device manager -> show devicess by connection).
Gigabit LAN sits on special PCIe port and not showed in device manager as port.
#2 for WLAN and #4 for ExpressCard. I can assume #1 is for WWAN (leftmost) miniPCIe slot, #3 for WUSB (rightmost) miniPCIe slot and #5 for dock.

Hello again. Due to interest: wha about T61 mPCI-E ports. Are they both with PCI-E lines? Like in this one:

MOD edit: picture WAY too big, tags removed.
Please read the Forum Rules, especially Section 5!

This is 4:3 (non widescreen) mobo.
Yes both mPCI-e slots have pci-e lines connected.
3nd unsoldered mPCI-e slot is under black film in area near red circles and yes it should have pci-e lines too.

PS
This is very good mobo - 42w7872 - native penryn compatible with intel Gfx.

Going to have two of them soon, this is image from the internet. Thanks! :)

And wait, wait... Are there more board for T61 and T61P with unsoldered mPCI-E lines?!

That would mean a lot to me!

Any other USB devices that would be recommended?

Smallest USB GPS does not fit. Maybe it would be better to go with 3G/4G card? Any ideas?

It is a bit pointless to put in the memory, while having two SSD's in that laptop.
