T60 and OpenSUSE 13.2

#1 Post by dizmayed » Fri May 15, 2015 6:50 pm

Oh, what fun! I installed this Linux distro, erasing an old dual-boot (XP/2000!) T60. SUSE looks great, so far <everything> seems to work (I'm here, aren't I?).

I haven't used SUSE in years. It's plenty easy. Other Linux distros are easy, too.

I know this forum has a Linux section. This post just serves as a reminder that older rigs with out-dated Windows installs come back to life with the various Linux OSs.

Some people complain that SUSE, Ubuntu, etc. are crappy ways to learn Linux bc they work so well. The critics are right, but they're plenty opportunities to get under the hood should you care to.

Dear ERU3:

Yeah, battery life/undervolting: a common goal with many Linux distros, I believe. Since I'm new to SUSE, and since my T60 battery has so little life to conserve, I haven't paid attn to battery life vs Windows, e.g., much less undervolting, etc.

I did glance at SUSE forums, as you may have yourself, and I see relevant threads. My original intent was simply to point out (perhaps unnecessarily to this forum's readers) that the many free Linux distros make the introduction to Linux pretty easy and perhaps esp useful for those w/ older Thinkpads who don't want to buy a new Windows OS and are willing to try SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.

There is a certain pleasure in trying a new Linux OS. It's very likely to "just work," depending on how granular you go into the details. If the details confound you, if some things don't work, you can dig deeper into Linux for a fix or just try another distro. The cost to you is ~$0.
