I've gone through several optical drives for my T60/61p that all die in stages. Initially they start by giving errors while attempting to burn discs, eventually they don't read discs at all despite the drive showing up in Windows. Sometimes removing/reinserting the drive in the bay clears it up so it can read a disc, but overall I consider the drive dead.

Just replace the drive, it's not at all uncommon for them (or any laptop's optical drive) to fail due to shocks a laptop receives through normal use and transportation.
