T61/T500 heatsinks into T60 chassis thoughts...

I have done a envaluation on trying T61 heatsink (taken from 15.4" chassis) in T60 (14.1, 15 and 15.4 share same original heatsink).

Several problems comes up: The built up metal part makes the heatsink clamp distorted and also needs small modification to clamp. And that tall layers will make keyboard bow upwards.

Finally, these heatsink are made for thinner Nvidia GPUs than ATI means northbridge will not even be touched at all. Even clamps would not fit.
Funny thing, can use T61 upper clamp there perfectly if that worked. The lower clamp fits perfect but need a way to make a new screw on lug for that.

In closing note, found cheap source of T60p type, extra copper for GPU and couple pieces of copper for CPU.

Happy thinkpadding: and cheers, thinkpadcollection

Dunno if this is considered a necrophiliac reply, but one year later I'm wrestling with the same issues. They certainly have improved the clamping system for the bridge and GPU since the 60p! I'm trying one of the 41W6407s that you mention here ... note that it also has a longer pipe for the CPU ... My thinking is that this T60 clamping system will not permit a precise fit for the GPU and Northbridge on a 60P and the pads are a necessity ... but why not try really high-performance pads? So I have a brand new 6407 assembly ready and am awaiting delivery of Fujipoly pads, 1.5mm, with a conductance of about 11W/mK. I'll be posting results when all is done. And Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU, natch.

Moderator edit: Snipped unnecessary quoting.

Thermal pad on northbridge and 0.8mm or 1mm copper shim on the GPU if required.

Keep in mind these heatsink you mentioned is flat for both GPU and northbridge.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

So that worked for you? What kind of maximum temperatures do you see on your Fire GPU with that setup? The approach I'm trying is to let the compressibility of the premium quality pads level everything out rather than using metal on metal for the GPU. I'm very interested to see what the Fujipoly can do with this T60p system and also with my Intel-graphics Frankenpad.

I wrote a small guide here so that people wouldn't have to figure out the whole T60 heat sink issue anew every time: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=114717

Very nice, thanks for posting. I've saved the page for future reference. As no one seems to have experimented with high-performance thermal pads for the GPU in systems employing the T60 Northbridge/GPU pressure clamp (which includes both T60s and most Frankenpads), I will soon be in a position to contribute to the accumulated wisdom---my Fujipoly 11W/mK material arrived in the mail today :)

They have, Arctic cooling has produced prototype thermal pads which have been tested with good results in the German forum. I'll search for the link if you want to read up on it.

Thanks, that would be nice. Meanwhile, I should soon have results to report using the Fujipoly. My hypothesis is that the pressure is so poor and uneven in this type of system that good pads might be better than a metal-to-metal arrangement such as those involving shims. I question whether a 'hard-tail' arrangement is optimal under such circumstances.

I understand the desire to minimize bandwidth and I will try to minimize my quoting. Back to the topic, one potential advantage of pads is they wrap around the top of the chip and increase the surface area of contact somewhat.

Update: T60p fan assembly 41w6407 Arctic Silver 5 and T9500 CPU running EXTREMELY cool on a T61 Intel graphics mobo in a Frankenpad ... streaming video indefinitely with temperatures running from the high 40's to low 60's when streaming and displaying the full 1600X1200. The moment I stop the streaming the CPU temperature plunges and goes down into the high 20's. No data on GPU, as this is an integrated graphics board. Next experiment will be on Frankenpad with Nvidia 140m and Fujipoly pads ... same type of fan assembly. So far I'm very impressed with the advanced T60 heatsink and fan assembly.

Note: do not use "a...s...s...'...y" as abbreviation for assembly, you will get censored automatically :D
