Are all trackpoint soft rims smaller in diameter these days?

#1 Post by fefrie » Mon Jun 08, 2015 1:48 pm

I have a soft rim trackpoint and it's a fairly big button.

I just ordered some more on ebay, and they seem to be of a smaller diameter.

Is this some new style that I'm unaware of?

Could be some knockoffs? Smaller overall dimensions = lower cost. I don't have a soft rim on this A31p but I should have some at home that I can measure.

Do you have a link to the eBay auction?

One thing to understand is that a soft rim cap gets more flat as it gets worn, and as such its diameter becomes noticeably bigger as well.

Yeah, I ordered some ebay soft rims and they barely cover the gbh hole.

The older soft rim that I have is pretty wide overall.

And these new soft rims makes the trackpoint go wild all over the place.

The soft rim on my home A31p measures 9.3mm in diameter. It has been squished from use as I've had it on this system for several years. A new one out of the 91P8421 bag measures 8.35mm.

Its a hit or miss on eBay.
Sometimes there are good copies and then there are bad.
The good ones are grippy, dont let my finger slide so easily.

I just measured and got about the same thing.

It's interesting how it's a game of mms and how picky we are.

The one on my T61 got replaced for free when they replaced the motherboard under warranty when the machine was 4.1 years old.

I ordered 20 soft rim caps on ebay, and they are indeed smaller in diameter than my original T60's. I believe these are knockoffs though, and they do depress over time as previously mentioned, but still not as 'wide' as a genuine cap.
(I believe these are fake anyways, colour is missing the correct hue and there's no number in the inside, not to mention some with minor imperfections). With that said I quite like these fakes.

I haven't ordered any genuine caps from lenovo, however I probably should to see if they actually have change size from the T6x days.
