T60 , advanced dock, ATI X1300, sleep & hibernate crashes laptop

I was using a T61, Windows 7, nvidia gpu, advanced dock with AMD X1300 video card, Middleton bios. The bios was set to boot with external card only. I'm using a Samsung external monitor connected to the dvi of the X1300 in the dock. This set-up worked fine as long as the T61 didn't have more than 2 gb ram.
The T61 died, so I got a T60 with W7 and ATI x1300 gpu, bios 2.23 (not Middleton). Connected it to the dock and set bios to boot with external graphics just like the T61. This set-up is working except for one glitch I can't figure out.
When going into sleep or hibernate, the system crashes. I get a blank screen, one LOUD beep, the lights and fans are still on. Can't come out of sleep/hibernate, can only reboot by holding the power button down for a hard reset. Shutting down without going into sleep/hib works normally.
If I connect the monitor to the dock's dvi, set the bios to boot with internal graphics, all is well. It does this with 3 gb or 2 gb of ram.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? Could it be the T60 doesn't have the Middleton? I understand the Middleton isn't for the T60.
Thanks
