WWAN for T60

#1 Post by rr8086 » Sat Jul 04, 2015 9:11 am

Hello all,

I own an IBM Thinkpad Type 2008 which did not come with the WWAN antenna. From eBay I got an appropriate WWAN card (Sierra) and a SIM reader. I lack the bezel with the WWAN led and the antenna...

So here is the problem...Can anybody tell me which are the correct FRU/PNs for the two antennas required for the WWAN card to work? I understand I need two.

I tried to look for this information but it's a bit confusing between 14.1" and 15". I got this machine from eBay and as far as I can tell, it's a 14.1" computer.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You also need a different LCD assembly - T60/p units that were shipped with integrated WWAN have a "bump" on the RH side of the lid. They also require a different upper keyboard bezel.

Secondly, unless you bought a Lenovo-issued Sierra card you'll get an error on boot and the machine will get stuck there until the card is removed.

What is the full 7-character model number (2008-???) found on the same sticker that holds the serial number and the production date on the bottom of the laptop? Please do NOT post the serial number itself.

Really? I was under the impression that the bump is a separate part, and that the non-WWAN models have a simple blank cover instead of it (FRU 41V9909 for "14 and 41V9910 for 15"), but that they all integrate with the existing LCD assembly.

The HMM shows only a single "LCD Cover Kit" and a single "Keyboard bezel assembly" per screen size, giving no indication that a different one is required for WWAN models.

Thanks, George. The 7-chars model number is 2008-YZE.

I had the impression reading the hardware manual that the bump on the right side is a separate part that comes with the antenna. Is one antenna enough? One antenna goes into the LCD, from what I understand, what about the other (AUX)?

Thanks for your message! I also had the impression that it was a separate part and that you have to remove a dummy piece of plastic in the monitor's frame. The thing is...I don't understand which is the right antenna for my thinkpad t60 2008-CTO (or 2008-YZE... Both are written under its belly...). Thanks!

Your machine is indeed a 14" system, and a pretty loaded one at that:

Code: Select all

Based on 2008-CTO: T7200(2GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless,
Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro
I'm in the middle of something right now, but will go upstairs and check my 15" system with integrated WWAN then report back...in a few hours.

One thing to bear in mind - since I can't see the location in your user profile - is that if you're sticking with Verizon you won't need a SIM card reader, but if you're going with Vodafone (AT&T?Rogers?) you will.

Some years back I purchased a few T60 WWAN antenna's directly from IBM parts UK - The T60 14.1" WWAN antenna FRU's were 42W2671(Vodafone) & 42W2670 (not listed in the HMM, but confirmed with IBM parts UK at the time as replacement for FRU: 91P6988).
Both these FRU's consisted of three identical parts:
Main WWAN antenna (Red wire) P/N 93P4373 - which sits on the RHS of the LCD top cover
Aux WWAN antenna (Blue wire) P/N 39T9647 - which sits under the LHS of the keyboard bezel
Black patch stick on antenna P/N 41W4945 - which is attached to the right hand hinge
T60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [Another T60 FrankenPad!...Different approach]
R60F: (Integrated Intel GPU) - [ThinkPad R60 15.0" FrankenPad]
