T60 Repurposing Ideas

Hi, I recently (Jan 2015) built a new computer and need ideas on what to do with my old T60.

It's running Debian Sid (Unstable), Linux, and I'd like to get suggestions on what I should do to repurpose this computer.

You can use it as a back up machine or server. If your T60 is a 4:3 15" model with ips screen, you could think about creating a frankenpad with a motherboard from a T61, but that may be too much work and time depending on what you are comfortable with.

I see repurposing old computers as being difficult, unless you already have something in mind. If you have the port replicator for your T60, then you might be able to do more with it. For example, you could hook it up to a TV and use it for media consumption, playing DVDs, watching videos online, stuff like that. You could also use it to emulate video games consoles and things alike.

When it comes down to brass tacks, repurposing a T60 might just mean using it as a general purpose laptop again. Anything based on the 945 chipset should have some life left in it still.

I use one T60 in my kitchen on a minidock using a couple of monitors, a 23" for main display and an occasional 19" for extended display. I have another set up to make scheduled FM recordings off a receiver by way of a USB soundcard. That machine used to be my server machine, but I since got a Synology NAS for those duties. I have personally found that I cannot have too many PCs, they all get used, at least occasionally. For example, my main midtower (HDTV and etc.) machine fizzled a couple of weeks ago, smelled burning electronics when turning it on. Until I find the time to figure out what's with that machine I am using my 2nd midtower in its place. It's running Windows 2000!

Synology NAS boxes are great! In December 2014 I upgraded my old DS-101j bought in February 2006, to a nice powerful DS415+ and it has taken the strain off all my computers.
