Greetings,
The fan/heatsink combo I bought for my T60 several months ago was apparently the 41W6409 for a T60 with discrete gpu and cpu, but mine is an integrated model which uses the 41W6408 .
As I cannot return it, I was thinking of simply replacing the old fan with the one on the new heatsink. But I'm not sure that it will fit, because the only FRU's I could find were for the fan/heatsink combo.
I was therefore wondering if anyone here happened to know if these fans are identical.
Thanks very much in advance.
Steve
BTW, my T60 is a 6371-EXU, in case that makes a difference.
Fan Replacement for T60 w/15.4" screen and integrated GPU
Re: Fan Replacement for T60 w/15.4" screen and integrated GPU
I'm surprised no one has commented yet.
From what I know the fan itself between the two heatsinks are identical in size and shape. So the fan on the new heatsink is a direct drop in replacement on your existing heatsink.
On another note, unless I am wrong (and I'm sure the more knowledgeable ones here may correct me), but that fan you bought should work fine as is on your laptop. Have you tried installing it yet?

Thanks very much for confirming this for me, Easy Wind. I was starting to think that nobody here could answer my question.Easy Wind wrote:I'm surprised no one has commented yet.

No, I didn't want to open my computer up until I was sure I could use the new fan. If you're saying that the heatsink/fan combo for T60's with discrete cpu's and gpu's that I bought can replace my heatsink/fan combo, I'd be very surprised, as the former looks a lot bigger than the latter. But maybe someone else can confirm this?Easy Wind wrote:On another note, unless I am wrong (and I'm sure the more knowledgeable ones here may correct me), but that fan you bought should work fine as is on your laptop. Discrete fans work with integrated GPU, but integrated fans do not work with discrete GPU.

I received this reply from TuuS in another forum. As it seems to be definitive, I thought I'd add it here for anyone who may have the same question.
"You can use the discrete heatsink on your integrated motherboard. Actually the best option in my opinion is to go with a T61 heatsink which is designed to cool the much more powerful X3100 graphics and uses thermal paste instead of the lame silicone type pads used to cool the T60 graphic systems. You can also replace these pads with thermal paste on the T60 heatsink but the T61 unit is better in my opinion. I can't tell you if the fans are interchangeable because there was more than one fan used on the T60 intel models, some were and some weren't. There were also a couple different discrete heatsinks, but either will more than suffice at cooling your integrated graphics. The platform that cools the discrete gpu won't be used so it's not an issue and the chipset cooling platform will suffice at cooling your integrated graphics.
