i have a thinkpad t60 that was given to me and i recently installed windows 7 on it. when i installed it the thinkvantage and volume buttons didnt work. i found a driver for the volume buttons and the on screen stuff and that works. when i look in the volume control in the task bar it doesnt show any change as to what the level is when i look at what the level is but the on screen display shows what the volume is doing. also right now the thinkvantage button doesnt do anything in windows. what am i to do to make these things work correctly.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
I believe that the (non)interaction between the keyboard volume control/on screen display and what is shown on the sliders in Windows Volume Control panel is "normal" when you have loaded all of the Lenovo drivers/utilities. I don't yet have Windows 7 on any of my T60p systems but that's the way it works on my Windows XP A31p (and other systems).
As far as the Thinkvantage button goes I'm not entirely sure at the moment which package needs to be installed. Wait around for a few minutes and somebody will probably chime in.

I installed windows 7 on a T60 a while ago. I don't remember having any problems with the audio buttons even with a bare 7 install. T60 uses hardware controlled volume buttons, which shouldn't require any drivers to work properly at all. Make sure the mute button isn't engaged, and then repeatedly press the volume up button. It would help to play an audio file while you are doing this so you can immediately get results.

i have the volume buttons on the laptop work and i got the on screen display to work with the buttons, but the thing is that when i check the volume level on the task bar it stays the same percentage rather then moving up and down with the buttons when i change the level. so if i move the volume up to say 75 with the buttons on the laptop the volume slider in the task bar stays at 60 even if i turn the volume up or down with the buttons on the laptop it doesnt show other then the on screen display

That is the intended functionality. The volume buttons work at the hardware/firmware level, like turning the knob on external speakers. (The volume is also changed for the headphone jack.) The volume level in Windows is NOT changed by the volume buttons on any ThinkPad I've ever encountered.
