T60 display fails after boot to XP, but works on external monitor

I have a problem with my T60. I'm running Win XP. After boot, the Windows user selection screen comes up. This happens whether or not an external monitor is connected. With no external monitor the lcd goes black when username is selected. the machine is still running and there is HDD activity. With a external monitor connected, and following the same sequence of steps, both monitors remain on. And if fact, if the vga cable is pulled from the system unit, they both continue to function. Puzzling.
The machine is a 2007-5CU
All parts are original
I'm sure I've left something out, but I'm not sure what.
Maybe the gods are telling me it's Frankenpad time.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Mike

My guess is it sounds like the display driver is getting confused after you log in/it loads the user registry hive and sets the display mode to external only. Then when you actually connect an external display and remove it, the driver "sees" that the display is disconnected then reverts to LCD only. Go into display properties after you get it up and check the driver settings to ensure there's nothing obviously configured to that effect.

You may also want to check the BIOS settings for the display.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I went away for the holidays and am just getting back to this. I also picked up a really nice w520 4284-a96 that I've been getting to know. I'm back home now and it's time to get to work on the trusty old T60.
