T60 with integrated Intel 950 graphics running W7 forgets display settings

#1 Post by Muse » Tue Feb 09, 2016 4:16 pm

This machine is T60 14.1" with Intel integrated 950 graphics. Twice in the last couple weeks the machine has seemingly spontaneously lost its graphics settings. I have the machine connected to a mini-dock and configured to output the main Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit screen via DVI to a 23" digital display. The VGA output of the mini-dock is output to a 19" digital display, so that I can drag non-maximized windows from one display to the other. This is my standard arrangement for this system. The 23" has native res at 1920x1080, the 19" display is set at 1280 x 1024.

The machine plain forgot the settings twice and I had to reset them, a royal PITA which required a reboot on at least one occasion. What might be happening here?

A shot in the dark: replace the CMOS battery, it's probably near-dead after so many years...
Check in BIOS that Passwords are not set, or that you know them if so.

Yes, I've never replaced the CMOS battery. When I do so, will I need to update a lot of info? I haven't made a ton of BIOS changes, IIRC, but I suppose there are some.

I've never set up any BIOS password stuff, so I don't know why or if I should look into that.

What/where in replacing the battery? I have a number of batteries on hand, in the refrigerator, maybe I have what I need for that. What does the T60 use?

My "guess" is that this is an old graphics card with old drivers, and this is some old forgotten driver bug, that neither MS or intel care to fix anymore.

Get the HMM via the HMM link at the top of this page.
Remove palmrest and keyboard.
It's the small yellow battery under the mouse-keys, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/391144136868
You'll need to set date/time after that, nothing else really.
