Ultimate T420, T420s, or T520?

At this point I think it's time to acknowledge that the T60 is running at the end of it's useful life.
I no longer carry around the T60. Recently I got a 7" 8.1 tablet and a Lenovo compact bluetooth keyboard. I'll never carry around a laptop ever again.
So now I'm looking for a home machine more powerful for video work. The T60 I have has the SXGA screen.
I like the ACTUAL height. of the screen. I'm assuming that if I got the T42X, that the height of the screen would be shorter. I wouldn't like that. So I'm more of a candidate for the T520?
And what's the max vertical resolution that I can get? I'm hoping for 1080 or 1024. Is that possible?

Yes, a T520 sounds better in terms of height for what you want. You can get a 1920x1080 screen.

for video work, consider the W520 instead of the T520, they are both the same in most hardware specs, except that the W520 have more ram support (32GB), and better nvidia graphics card.
the W520 is also easier to find with the screen of 1920x1080 resolution and quad core processor.

The T440p can get you a quad core and a better screen than either the T520 or W520, though the trackpoint set up is a bit lame on the T440p. Replacing it is an option, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. If the budget allows, the newer T460p will be an option soon.

A lot depends upon whether you want to use the laptop screen, or external screen,
or a combination. You might want to check if there are any issues with
the OS that you are using with whatever monitor setup you want.
Also, you might want to factor in whether or not you are going to want
to upgrade to a 4k/5k display at some point, and how well that is reported
to work with whatever machine / OS combination that you select.
I ran into so many problems running Linux with an external display with
Thinkpads that I just picked up a couple of old Dell workstations;
PCs are very flexible and under-rated for stationary environments.

Not if like me you live in England (UK) because I have been looking for over a year with no success, and a quick look on Ebay brings no luck; there are plenty in the USA though.

Yeah it depends on where you are. ie. we get a great deal of mid range Thinkpads here but hardly any 15" or high spec workstations.
I'm over that stage of my life but I have a few Elitebooks with the 1,9 x 1,2 screen and Dell Precisions.
To me, Thinkpads means 12-14" so thats what I get.
