W500 fan advice for my T60

I have a 14" T60 (2623-kfu) with mother board part number 41W1456. I need to replace my fan and I read here that I can use a W500 fan and heat sink combo for better cooling. I searched on https://www.thinkpad-parts.com and there are many listings for $45 and many for $79. I am not sure which part number to choose. Can someone please suggest.

I have heard about this mod indeed. There is more information in this post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=117740 . There, they suggest p/n 42w2820 ( a T61p fan). Apparently these are as good or better than the W500 fan. Also, one user reported that he couldn't fit the W500 fan, but he could fit the T61p fan. You should be able to find these second hand for a reasonable price. Just clean it thoroughly and it should be fine. Also changing the thermal paste will give a significant drop in temperature. This once got me a ~10 degree drop on my R61i. Just make sure you clean the sink very well with an electrical toothbrush or something like that and apply a very thin layer of thermal paste (about the size of 1 grain of rice).

If you have a discrete graphics T60 the only "upgrade" fan I'd consider is the T61p fan, the T or W 500 fan won't fit without a lot of modifications and IMO the T61p cools better and has a larger heatsink. I've done this mod several times and it works very well, just make sure you use thermal paste on the gpu, not a pad like the T60 uses. If you have an Intel graphics board then it would be overkill, you can still use it, but the T60 intel graphics needs very little cooling. and any T60 or T61 fan except the 14" widescreen would work.

If you're interested I have a few new NOS heatsinks for a T61p, I usually only sell them with a frankenpad kit with T61 motherboard and the rest of the parts needed for the ultimate t60 upgrade, but I could sell you just the heatsink, or if you want to try to source one locally I don't have the number in front of me at the moment, but there are two for the t61p and the only difference is the clps to route the antenna wires, I think they are 42w2820 and 42w2028. One is 14.1" and the other 15.4, but they are interchangeable and either will fit a T60 with a very easy modification.
