v5200 on Windows 10

Has anyone had luck installing a proper driver for FireGL v5200 running 64bit Windows 10? Or even softmodding it to x1600?

Just installed this new motherboard into my T60, but so far it's just giving me a headache

The last officially supported drivers for the v5200 series was for vista. If you want to run wins 10 you could try manually installing the vista drivers, but I'd recommend a T61 motherboard as nVidia doesn't stop support for older hardware.

I tried the manual driver install, and while interwebs suggest that it should do it, it is no longer possible after Win10 got the 1511 update.
The thing is my T60 is a 14" 4:3 screen, so I'm out of luck with T61 motherboards. Probably will just wait around until I get a decent deal for a T60 x1400 motherboard then

Personally, I wouldn't use W10 or W8 on anything older than the T410 generation. Too many issues with drivers, overheating, and instability. Even if you solve them, performance usually isn't as good as W7. It would probably be less hassle to get a 4:3 T61 and swap in the lid assembly + hinges from your T60 to avoid the snapping hinge issue. A T9300/T9500 + 8GB ram T61 feels much faster than a maxed out T60.

There is a version of the 5200 graphics driver for Windows 7, but it's a bit hard to find as it's hidden in the Windows update file server. Although, there's a thread on this forum for it. I've tested it on my vintage T60p with Windows 7 a few months ago, and it seemed to work fine.

Slightly off topic for a moment......I just used a benchmark site to compare the ATi FireGL Mobility v5200 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS-140m which is in the T61. I was shocked to see the ATi that is in my Z61p (T60p) performs much faster! The FX-570m was a closer match it seems. Do these benchmarks seem accurate?

I had found those drivers, but as mentioned above, Windows 10 wouldn't want to take them any more, and the main difference between people who actually managed to install it and my machine is the build version of Windows 10. And being a full-time PC tech myself, I noticed that once it got that 1511 build update some time in November, some legacy driver options have been simply opted out. Same goes to the Power Manager driver that used to add a battery gauge on the first Windows 10 build, but can no longer be installed after the update

I knew the risks before installing Windows 10, but with a SSD and 3gb RAM, plus all the updates the OS got since it's launch, it runs as smooth as Windows 7, and functionally way superior. At least with the GMA950. v5200 seems to be out of question, and not sure what's the story with x1300/x1400..

Concerning T61, I am trying to find a deal for one, maybe with a cracked screen or dead RAM, as people tend to dispose of electronics really fast here. Is the lid swap even possible for 4:3 models? Isn't the left hinge thicker? And are the palmrests interchangeable? Since one of the main reasons I'm still using it is of the IBM logo (and build quality, and 4:3).
Plus stepping up the T7600G a few clicks to 2,66Ghz does improve it's score in benchmarks, and by a huge margin! So not sure that T9500 could blow it away, and given 2x4GB DDR2 prices, doubt I would ever max out that one

You can swap the entire lid assemblys (must include the lcd cover, lcd bezel, hinges, antennas) of 4:3 T60 14.1" and 4:3 T61 14.1" models. It is basically a drop in replacement. The left hinge on the T61 is thicker, but its mounting point and shape is the same. That is why the T61 and T60 hinges can mount on the same frame.

For performance, the improved architecture and increased cache of the T9300/T9500 penryn cpus makes it noticeably faster than the older ones. I had a T61 + intel gpu + 4GB ram + samsung 840pro ssd + T7700. I then went to a T9500 and the difference was significant. Heavier js web pages and 720p 60fps were no longer laggy.

I have a T60p with the FireGL V5250 and just put together a 4:3 14" T61 with a Quadro 570 mb (43y9046) I found on ebay and fps in WoW literally doubled from 30 fps on the T60p to 60+ fps with the same settings (1400x1050/minimum settings). And the Quadro actually runs cooler too The X9000 cpu I have in the T61 undervolts amazingly well too, currently running prime95 on it @1.025V. Max temps I've seen so far on the CPU/GPU is 80c/69c.

I swapped the entire lid/lcd assemblies between a 14" T60p and a T61, I think I had to switch over the keyboard bezels as well. I tried fitting the T60 palmrest on the T61 but I think it has different catches at the bottom so it felt loose even when tightened down.

Keyboard bezels should be interchangeable between 4:3 T60 and T61 models. I haven't had any issues with this. If you are using a T61 lid assembly, you must remove the little tab on the T60 keyboard bezel so the hinge will fit. Palmrests from T60 -> T61 are not interchangeable since they indeed have a different catch on the bottom left side. You can use a pocket knife to remove this catch and make it fit, but in my experience, the lid latch tends to get stuck when closed. Better off sticking with the original T61 palmrest in T61 systems.

Try the Catalyst 10.2 drivers and mobilitymodder. That's always worked in 7 for me.

None of those work properly on Win10, so I've put it up on eBay If anyone has a fried motherboard and looking for a decent replacement under Windows 7 - now's a good chance

Did you follow these steps?
1. Install MobilityModder
2. Run the 10.2 installer and cancel the setup wizard (After the files have been extracted)
3. Run MobilityModder on the extracted files (usually in C:\ATI\)
4. Run the installer manually (located in the extracted files)

Does that allow you to install just the drivers, or does it softmod it to x1600? Cause you can easily install original Lenovo drivers from 2007, but the thing is still slow on any OpenGL application (and I mean games) without softmodding it to x1600. It had barely 5-10 more FPS that GMA950 on Morrowind, which makes it a no-brainer given all the battery drain, carbon footprint, heat, etc etc

P.S. you can just right-click the installer and extract it with WinRAR/7-Zip For future reference

It allows you to use the desktop FireGL drivers, which are a bit newer, with the mobile chip. I haven't tried Morrowind, but even playing some of the later source-engine games is out of the question. It's a pretty ancient chip now and it was never designed for games.
