T60 motherboard replacement with R60 or alike

#1 Post by tpd » Wed Apr 27, 2016 8:57 am

Hello,

Currently I'm using Thinkpad T60 with damaged motherboard (VGA port is dead) which I would like to change with R60 or alike one. Here are the details of current configuration:

Model-Type Number: LENOVO 2007V89 ThinkPad T60
SerialNumber: L31H41D

ThinkPad T60 FRU:42T0120 Laptop Motherboard
Main Circuit Board Serial Number: VF0KP6AH1TC
Bus Clock: 167 megahertz
BIOS: LENOVO 79ETE7WW (2.27 ) 03/21/2011

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Processor T7600 @ 2.33GHz (originally 1,83 Mhz 32-bit)

LCD 1024x768 [Monitor] (15.2"vis)
Display adapter: AMD Mobility Radeon X1300

T 60/T60 P Series Middle Frame P/N 26R9396: (2006-09-12)

Did anybody succeed to make such a replacement, if so, where can learn more about the subject.

Thanks in advance,
TPD

Welcome to the forum.
I have swapped probably 2-300 of such motherboards, no problem.

There are several options of motherboards, with:
- Intel GMA 950 graphics (up to 128MB shared VideoRAM)
- yours has ATI X1300 graphics (64MB)
- ATI X1400 graphics (128MB)
- ATI FireGL V5200 or V5250 (256MB)

How? Click on the HMM link at the top of this page and download the illustrated manual for ThinkPad T60/p (1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2613, 2623, 2637)

If you need a replacement board, I have several for sale, just PM me (with your location).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thanks for answering,

I added some additional information on my T60, can you be more precise regarding motherboard with ATI FireGL V5200 or V5250 (256MB) graphics (model P/N, serial number etc.)? Is any other then R60's motherboard suitable for upgrade, like R61's or else?

You have a 15" 4:3 T60, which is a favorite for turning into a Frankenpad, using a 14.1" 4:3 T61 mobo.
Read up on Frankenpads on the T60 forum first, everything has been discussed over and over again already.
T60/R60 are limited to 3GB RAM, T61/R61 can take up to 8GB RAM.

Details about each motherboard, such as P/N, are in the T60 HMM which you should have downloaded by now.
Any T60 motherboard from that HMM will fit.
Serial Numbers can be entered/modified into the BIOS and are different for each motherboard.

Since you have a T60 already, stay with T60 (or T61 mobo for Frankenpad), don't go to R60 or R61.
R60/R61 motherboards have an extra Firewire port, which is not available in a T60.

I spent some time reading about modifications but I couldn't find any short list of the best motherboards to fit my case. Since I have possibility to get any motherboard could you recommend any peculiar (8GB RAM, the best graphics, supporting my CPU etc).

Many thanks

If it must support your T7600 CPU, the best one is the mobo with ATI FireGL V5200/V5250 (whichever version is available).
However, that still only allows for max. 3GB usable RAM.

If you want 8GB RAM, you'll need a new T61 mobo with nVidia NVS140M graphics, a different CPU and a new fan.
In other words, you'll be upgrading to a FrankenPad.
Your best option is this: T60/p to T61 Frankenpad kit from forum member TuuS.

Thanks,

I agree, 4GB isn't enough, video is rather poor. I'll consider your advice, CPU isn't that expensive.
