15-inch inverter in 14-inch standard screen model

#1 Post by Mindfulness Quebec » Fri May 06, 2016 6:01 pm

It crossed my mind that installing a 15" inverter like FRU 13R1014/13R1015 might squeeze a little extra brightness out of a 14" standard screen on a T60 or T61 that was not actually failing but maybe a bit dull. Has anyone tried this or have they any theoretical knowledge as to why this might or might not work? Easy enough to try, but I don't have a spare 15" inverter at the moment without robbing an existing laptop.

All the inverters should be interchangeable. I am running an inverter from a WUXGA 15.4" T61p in my 14.1" T61 with no problems.
Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, T23, 600X, 770
Other: mk5 Toughbook cf-19, mk1 Toughbook cf-53

Indeed. But do you think it pumps any extra current into the backlight compared to the original type? It all depends on how it regulates current, and whether a 15" inverter is designed to produce a higher constant current than a 14" type. Do you think your 14" screen became brighter with the change of inverter?

The more powerful inverter just makes sure that the higher resolution displays get enough juice to be properly bright. I saw no noticeable difference in display brightness between the XGA inverter that came with my T61, and the one from my WUXGA T61p, after I upgraded to an SXGA+ display. My panel was just dim out of the box.

You will need to do an LED mod if you want higher brightness.

Yeah, probably. But I'd like to try the experiment when I have a spare 15" inverter.... In theory the inverter is a constant current source. The 15" inverter may be designed to supply a slightly higher current. I've ordered a couple of spare inverters from China and I'll give it a try when they get here ... if they ever get here hahaha.

There's no noticeable difference between inverters in the T6x series, regardless of which screen/motherboard they are attached to.
I have worked with hundreds of them, and done oodles of LED-mods on inverters.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

So I won't notice anything, huh? :)
