Inherited T60p with a video issue
I have a slight issue with a T60p that my brother gave me. The bottom third of the screen is just lines of the color that should be displayed on the win 7 login screen. My question is whether or not it needs a new motherboard, or whether I can just fix the thing with a dab of arctic silver and replacing the factory heatsink fan. Any help would be appreciated. My Brother is not the most conscientious computer user in terms of how he treats them, and is by no means a technophile. Once again, any help is appreciated.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
My first guess is actually a bad LCD. I had an X24 do this; I originally thought it was the motherboard but after the middle third started doing the same thing as the bottom third one day, on a hunch bought a replacement LCD for it and sure enough, it's just fine once again.

I do happen to have a complete T60p LCD assembly with a Hydis WUXGA FlexView display in it, although it does have a couple pressure marks on it.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
Thanks, Terminator. I'll keep your offer in mind!
I bought a replacement screen (a Sharp) new from China and installed it. I think the one that came out of it was WSXGA, this one is WUXGA, but for some reason, it doesn't want to work at all. Do I need a new inverter board for it? I'm not really on the up and up in replacing LCD panels, but I got the thing in there (per the FRU replacement manual) and hooked up right. The laptop still works fine on an external monitor, but nothing at all on a brand new screen, which is puzzling.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
Are you sure about the screen descriptions? (WSXGA/WUXGA are for widescreen)
Please tell us the TYPE from the label on the laptop bottom. (looks like: TYPE: 2623-DDU)
What is the P/N of that Sharp screen? You may have bought a wrong one.
This link might help if you have a non-widescreen 4:3 T60p: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 62#p779362

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
It's a 15.4 widescreen. The type of this T60p is 8743-CTO. The Sharp LCD panel doesn't have a P/N like the Phillips that came out of it, that one is 13N7019, FRU 13N7020.
The only thing like a labeled bar code on the Sharp says LQ154M1LW2A. It's the same size and has the same type of connectors as the Phillips, so I'm stumped as to what the issue is.

That screen originally was used in Dell laptops.
It should fit after you carefully cut off some mounting clips.
If you were NOT careful, you could have wrecked the screen...
Maybe you blew a fuse?
Check F7 (backlight) next to the LCD-connector, among others.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
The Sharp fit in the mounting brackets out of the box with no problem, no cutting with a dremel or anything like that, which I wouldn't really want to try anyways if I didn't have to. I did have to cut the tape holding the wires to the metal casing to get the inverter plugged in. The F7 fuse *looks* to be in good shape, but I'm not certain what I'm looking for if it's bad, since it's so small. I'll try and dig up a continuity tester, I know I have one somewhere.
Edit: Tested, fuse F7 is good on a continuity test.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
After testing the Sharp in another laptop, that screen is dead. No backlight, no anything, so I got a Samsung model LTN154CT02 from the same supplier. I think this screen went into Dell Latitudes. Anyway, the backlight on this one works, but nothing shows up on the screen. The cable in it is new, so I'm not sure what the issue is now. The old screen will still display as much as it did before when I hook it up, so I'm kind of stumped, once again. Maybe I should just go hunt down another Phillips, I don't really need a WUXGA panel, but it would be nice, and it's what they keep sending me for whatever reason.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
Incompatible EDIDs? The T60 will check the EDID of the display and either not work (no backlight or screen display) or only work in certain OSes, etc. (keep in mind T61/x400/x500 do not check EDID like T60 do and seem to work with any screen)

I'd venture a guess that the BIOS is not happy with the EDID in that panel.Occamsspork wrote: Anyway, the backlight on this one works, but nothing shows up on the screen.
There are LG Philips WUXGA panels that were available for *60/61/*00 series ThinkPads...check some of the FRUs here:I don't really need a WUXGA panel, but it would be nice, and it's what they keep sending me for whatever reason.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
I have put that very same Sharp 15.4" LQ154M1LW2A in T61, T500 and R500 machines, they all work great there.
Never put one in a T60 though.
And I didn't know that T60 was picky with EDID.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
Could a defective GPU on the T60p be causing the issue with the internal display? Does the original screen still work?

No, the old screen does display 2/3rds of the screen, and it works on the vga out with no issues.TPFanatic wrote:Could a defective GPU on the T60p be causing the issue with the internal display? Does the original screen still work?
The BIOS was kinda what I was leaning towards too. I do wonder if the 61 screens would work in it, anyone have any experience?ajkula66 wrote:I'd venture a guess that the BIOS is not happy with the EDID in that panel.Occamsspork wrote: Anyway, the backlight on this one works, but nothing shows up on the screen.

If not I'm just going to ship these two screens back to China (arrgh) and dig around ebay for a LCD assembly from a t60p. I just want the thing to work again, I'm not all that picky about resolutions, I have two other computers.

Any 15.4" screen that originated in a ThinkPad, be it from R/T/W/Z series will work just fine.

Re: Inherited T60p with a video issue
The screen I bought from a T61 fixed it up just fine. Thanks for all the help!
Now, I have a question for anyone here. I read on a thread here that the Sharp I still have, an LQ154M1LW2A, is getting somewhat hard to find, and is regarded as a good panel. If anyone wants this thing, shoot me a PM and we can discuss it.
