Worth it to upgrade Thinkpad OS's?

#1 Post by Muse » Sat Jul 16, 2016 8:51 am

I have 3 Thinkpads:

T61 running Win7 Ultimate 64bit
T60 running Win7 Home Premium 32bit
T60 running WinXP Pro

I figure upgrade the first two to Win10 while it's free (before July29), after imaging them. If I don't like Win10, I can always revert to Win7 (and reinstall Win10 later for free as long as I activated Win10 while it was free).

I'm wondering if I should upgrade the WinXP machine. I'm using it for scheduled recordings off FM radio using a stand-alone FM receiver for signal and Total Recorder Standard Edition to schedule the recordings.

I could buy and install Win7 (for money) and upgrade to Win10 for free like the other machines if I do it before July 29. Two questions:

1. Is it worth it to do this?

2. How and where should I get Win7 for the XP T60 machine? It's specs:

IBM T60 TYPE NUMBER : 2623-D6U
1.8 GHz INTEL CORE DUO PROCESSOR
ATI x1300 Graphics

If XP is working fine and you don't use it for web browsing, then I would stick with XP.

Since you're already using both XP and Win 7...what do you think?

I don't think Windows 10 is worth upgrading to at all, but that's just my opinion.

I think the nVidia drivers are supported if you upgrade the T61, not too sure about the T60's AMD.
I find Windows 10 decent, just hate the auto updates and the small side popups for Office 365.
Not too sure about Intel graphic drivers, T400/E6400 works fine, but a Sony laptop with a 1st gen i5 didn't work out so well.

I don't use it for web browsing normally, but occasionally I have opened a browser for one thing or another. But I do almost no browsing with that machine. I suppose I could just leave it with XP. I think it has MSE installed and running. I could refrain from ever opening up a browser. My desktop is adjacent to it, but is generally in suspend, I could fire it up if I'm worried about opening browser on the XP machine. Don't know if that would be paranoid or what.

All 3 of my thinkpads (T61 and two T60's) have Intel CPUs. Did you mean something other than Advanced Micro Devices by AMD?

OK, so since I plan to install Win10 32bit and Win10 64 bit on a T60 and T61 respectfully, I think it is probably a really good idea to have drivers downloaded ahead of time for the machines so they will play nice with Win10. Can I get those from Lenovo? Or will Win10 have the requisite drivers within the install?

I believe he's referring to the T60's ATI/AMD GPU. The Radeon X1300/X1400 is quite old, their drivers haven't been updated in quite a while, so there's a big question mark on whether they work well on Windows 10 or not.
