Black stripe across the display on dropped machine.

#1 Post by cipurian » Fri Dec 23, 2016 9:27 am

As stated in subject I dropped laptop and my beautiful ips display looks like this. I was wondering if from your own experience you can tell if it's definite damage or if there's any hope to salvage the screen?

Yeah... that looks like LCD damage for sure. I've never really known any way to repair such issues, so replacement is about the only practical option I'm aware of.

This has a slim chance of working, but you have nothing to lose except some time and effort:

- re-seat both ends of the LCD ribbon cable; on the motherboard first (as that's the easiest one to get to) and then on the back of the LCD itself
- apply pressure and/or rap the display panel at the top of the black area

This is LCD one of IC flip chip vertical drivers is destroyed.

Get another like IPS LCD based on your original LCD's part number and FRU.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

I believe what thinkpadcollection is trying to say is that the problem with your display is due to one (or more) of the driver ICs that is mounted near the edge of the panel has either come loose or has been electrically damaged. Those driver ICs control a specific section of the display by routing the signals that switch on and off individual transistors, which in turn lights a pixel. The only way to fix this kind of problem is to replace the display. To keep things easy and to prevent compatibility issues, choose one that has the same part number.

"Flip chip" is a term used in the semiconductor industry that describes the mounting technique of devices onto printed circuit boards. This is done by soldering the tiny IC directly onto the printed circuit board (or an encapsulating ceramic or plastic package). It's a way is saving (some) costs, allows for miniaturization but needs to be designed with some expertise (thermal expansion of dissimilar materials is the prime gotcha). My suggestion to rap / squeeze the area above the dead zone on the display would apply in the event that the driver(s) have a bad (solder) connection to the circuit board. It would not help if they were electrically damaged.

Oh thank you I'll try the squeeze, but I'm legit afraid for my semi frankenpad. With a cost of those ips panels I'm not quite sure if its worth replacing.

It doesn't have to be all that bad...check here:
