T60 will run Win 7 great. Win 10, IIRC will run no problem. 80 GB HDD is cheap (always seems to have half a dozen kicking around). Install a test HDD, load the OS of your choice then test and play until your heart is content. Once satisfied load it for real. The 80 GB HDD is relegated to the next test machine. Only way to really know.

Not necessarily - I could not update one T60; the update process terminated because there was no Windows 10 driver for the particular video hardware. If that "Windows 10 update checker", or whatever they call it, is still around then that would be your best means of determining whether it is feasible.

OTOH, my two T60p machines ran 10 without incident.

Yes. The Intel GPU T60 will not have a driver and will probably not work great. ATI GPU T60/T60p (including the one mentioned in the first post) should be OK.

Right, I ran Windows 7 on an ATI X1300 T60 for a couple years as my work laptop up until about a year ago. Everything was fine. A little slow sometimes, but everything ran.

All of my T60s works great with Win 7, even the Intel GPU machines. Try it and find out for yourself.

Yours is a X1300 machine so why worry if Win 7 works with an Intel GPU T60?

I think there may be confusion here. Win7 may work well, Win10 less so.

It's annoying that the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor doesn't really work, and that MS never fixed the problem. I'm about to upgrade Vista to 7, and tried every known solution to get that program to work...but no go.

You're running with a Core Duo processor so it's 32 bit for you. If you buy a 64 bit Core 2 Duo then you can use Win7 64, but it's really pointless since it'll just use more RAM and your RAM is topped out at 3GB usable, the max 32 bit Windows will use anyway.

So long as you have 2GB or more, Windows 7 32 bit will run flawlessly especially on a T60. I'm fairly certain Lenovo has Win 7 drivers for T60 and you can use Vista drivers if you have to.

There are no Windows 10 drivers for T60 so you may lose functions and it's a pain getting what you can to work in 10.

I have just rescued an old T60 from a grandchild: Would not start due to some virus/malware problem.
Its a T60 2007 - 4CG from july 2006 with a 7200rpm HDD and 3Gb of usable RAM.

Downloaded the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, installed that on a USB-memory and changed the boot order in BIOS to boot from USB.
Installed Win10 pro without any issues (it had been running Win10 before). No driver problems in device manager, only issue seemed to be that it only installed a Microsoft Basic Driver for the ATI x1300 graphics card. But a little Googeling found the ATI Catalyst package, and that installed a proper driver for the x1300.

I do not seem to be able to make the fingerprint reader to function properly under "Windows Hello" and the battery icon from "Lenovo Settings" - app will not display on the taskbar. And Lenovo "System Update" will not run. But all of these shorcomings I find of lesser importance, so now this 10½ year old laptop is running pretty crisp and fast

Not sure if you have seen and read this Lenovo forum thread and all the additional user comments on two pages underneath?

I have been running Windows 10 32bit on my T60 1953CTO with Core 2 duo. I upgraded from Win7 32 bit but did a clean install of Windows 10 32bit. I went 32 bit because I use a couple of apps of great importance to me that won't run in 64bit. Anyway, if the info provided here is correct, I'm limited to 3GB RAM anyway, so it wouldn't matter.

I may be suffering some drawbacks to using Win 10 on the machine, but nothing comes to mind. What does come to mind is that the on-average-daily (or more) delays of 30 seconds to 5 minutes that I had under Windows 7 with the installed Intel 180GB SSD have disappeared after going to Windows 10.

Now, I figure that if Windows 10 will work on my other T60 (TYPE 2623-D6U, see OP), and without overriding drawbacks, I should purchase it instead of Windows 7 for that machine. After all, support for Windows 7 is terminating in 2020 IIRC. I also did a quick price check on Windows 7 and 10 at Newegg yesterday and IIRC, Windows 10 was cheaper (~$110 vs $130). Thoughts?

Well, support for Win7 will terminate in ~3 years, so I figure get Win10. I suppose if I don't like the way Win10 is working on this machine (the one in the OP), I can downgrade to Win7, right? And the price is around the same, in fact, checking a few days ago it looked like win10 was a few dollars cheaper. Newegg/Microcenter.

With this CPU I think I'm limited to 32bit. The machine already has 3GB RAM, I think that's max, right? I don't care to upgrade, would rather do a clean install. I suppose it's buy a disk, install from that.

I have Windows 7 Professional running on my T60, which isn't spec'd as highly as yours, and it runs fine, even does Aero. Go for it.
