HEAT SINK for lenovo t61 7663-05u (14,1") NVIDIA QUADRO

#1 Post by maksio » Mon Jan 23, 2017 10:56 am

Hello,

I have ordered a used heat sink and recived similar to my oryginal heat sink but not the same.

The oryginal heatsink has 2 heat pipes and labels (on fan):
8804A
DC5V 0.25A
MCF-216PAM05
Lenovo P/N 42W2463
FRU P/N 42W2462

The bought heat sink has 3 heat pipes
and labels:
on heat sink:
44C0558
FAN FOR ML1 DISCRETE
44c0557
On the fan:
DC BRUSHLESS
UDQFRPR68FFD
DC5V 0,24A
8424T

On the left there is the bought heat sink, on the right there is the oryginal one.

Will the bought heat sink and fan fit and can be used interchangeably or even if it fit there can be problems for example overheating, constant running or other probems?
Should I try it or return. Unfortunately can be a problem with finding the same heat sink.

I would think the three heatpipe version is superior to the two heatpipe version, just because it has more pipes, but they seem like very small pipes.

I will say that what you bought does not look like the beefiest heatpipe for this size. See this heatsink, for example, https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1KxilKFXX ... U-font.jpg with a bigger and longer heatpipe over the graphics. But that is a T400 heatsink which is incompatible.

Since they're both for 14.1" Wide T61s the heatsinks will fit and be interchangeable. I cannot say what the performance will be like. Since your graphics is the NVS140m (not the hotter FX570m) I think this heatsink, which is obviously a dedicated graphics heatsink, will be just fine. I am a little concerned about the CPU heatpipes, however, because your specs say you have a T9300 CPU which is a pretty high clock for its series. The heatsink you bought may be meant for T61s with slower and cooler processors.

You can try it and see if it works. If you need to get another one, try to get either the same one if you it worked, or one with heapipes that are as long and beefy looking as the original's.

You should not get a T400 heatsink, since the graphics chips are at different heights between Nvidia T61 and ATI T400. They look similar enough but at that very crucial position they do not deliver. Shame.

Thank you for the reply. I will try it then.

I have found the same heatsink here. Its a widescreen version

Here is the probably the oryginal.

What symptoms can be alarming as regards cpu shorter pipe? Laptop fan can runs continuously or laptop can shut down itself?

You'll probably feel more heat coming out the left vent than the rear vent with the shorter pipes version. So long as you apply thermal paste right you probably will not run into any overheating problems with this heatsink.

I do notice that the northbridge thermal pad is a little mangled on the new heatsink. That can probably be manipulated into a better shape.

Take a look on Polish allegro - there is a cheap fan unit ending with 2820 (FURUKAWA), works very nice on a full powered frankie, should work fine in your config as well.

You got lucky, the one with 3 heat pipes is a much better heatsink, however it looks like your control chip cooling pad is damaged, so you'll want to replace that, also clean the fan and make sure it isn't damaged other than the obvious. Seeing damage like that is usually a sign the part was not properly cared for, so check it out carefully and remember when shopping for parts that the way it was cared for says a lot about the seller.

There is one small advantage to your old Toshiba fan, there are very cheap generic fan motors available that you can use to revive your old one, however they take some careful attention to get them properly aligned since they don't fit perfectly out of box, but the used one you purchased is the furukawa design which rarely fails, but I've never found replacement motors for them.

ps. You may be able to carefully remove the pad from your old heatsink.
