Just bought a (used) T61... <PICS>

#1 Post by Annecy » Thu Feb 09, 2017 2:26 pm

Hello 8), TPcCS
"Like the title says " ...
and... I'm hoping to post/ask some questions ...
about the/my 1st T61 ~ which I bought over CL ... last week/month ...

This morning I found myself puzzling about ...
why the standard T61 specs say three (3) USB 2.0 ports
and I see (so far) only two (2) USB ports ... :?: :?: :?:

Thanx,
Ann

The T61 is a nice computer. I am in the process of setting up my 2nd T61. I "enhanced" it and plan to do a bit more in the near future. Then I am going back to upgrade the 1st T61.

How time have passed. You can get T61 on feebay as cheap as T42s. T500 is getting there. T61 will turn 10 years old this year. Many people on this forum (not me) can remember when T61 was new, and it sure got backlash for its... odd design choices just like the newest latest and greatest Lenovo Thinkpads. Love it or hate it, T61 is a classic now and will go down as one.

Yeah, I'm typing on my T61 with WSXGA+ 15.4" LCD (1650 x 1050), T7700 CPU, which I picked up used off ebay on Halloween 2010. Rather nice machine. A bit heavy for a laptop but that's where it's sitting! My other Thinkpads are 14" T60s. Running Win10 64bit on it with 8GB RAM. It's actually my most powerful PC at least in terms of RAM.

That is a 14.1" Widescreen T61. 14.1" Wide has two vertical USB on the left and one vertical USB on the right. 15.4" has one vertical USB on the left and two horizontal USB on the right.

Let's put it this way: very few people bothered about a T61 14.1" widescreen, including me.
I have to confess I have NEVER even seen a 14.1" WS, only 14.1" standard T61 and 15.4" WS T61.

Also let's not forget one of the greatest things about T/R6x is they come in both standard and widescreen. Back then widescreen is a new thing (even though not the first laptop to feature that) while now T/R6x is great for people who don't like modern and/or widescreen laptops as much

Oddly enough I got my 14.1" T61 Widescreens about a year ago, and I have never seen a 14" standard.

Being a Photo/web guy the widescreen T61 seems natural.

The 14.1" T61 Standard 4:3 (non-widescreen) is/was the source of motherboards for numerous T601 FrankenPads, until TuuS found his mother lode.

I prefer the Nvidia T61 models over the integrated graphics models even with the risk of the graphics card dying. It handles youtube videos much better as well as basic graphics on websites be it flash or other encoding.

Well not to mention it's capable of CAD handling, and the units offered by our beloved TuuS here can be OC'ed 50% or more without any issues.

I feel 14,1 WS T61 is very popular in Europe; far more common than 15,4 16:10 or 14,1 4:3.

My main beef about the 14" WS is that it uses a physically different size battery, so one has to keep two sets of spares on hand. Other than that, it's still a T61. I think they were the only ones with built in cameras (but externals cams are usually better anyway).
