ThinkPad T60 FrankenPad

#1 Post by nightninja96 » Mon Sep 04, 2017 10:20 am

Hello, I was intrested in creating a FrankenPad with my IBM ThinkPad T60 (2613). What I want to know is if I can put a IBM ThinkPad T60p motherboard in my IBM ThinkPad T60 (2613) it is the 14.1" version. This is the motherboard I was looking to put in my ThinkPad T60: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad ... SwImRYT5jJ
If there it doesn't fit properly without any modifications, what modifications would be necessary to make it fit.
Thanks :D

That's a drop-in replacement.
Make sure you also have the correct T60p discrete fan for it.

14.1" T61p. Will give you 8gb RAM instead of 3, much more powerful penryn CPUs and SATA II with Middletons BIOS AFAIK.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Ok, thanks for the advice but I was thinking if I could maybe put an x220 motherboard in my T60.

T61/p from a 14" (4:3) system.

Would the upgrade even be worth it?

Yes, IMO but that really depends on what you're intent the using the system for. If you want to go with serious graphics work, video rendering or gaming, you'll need a newer machine altogether. For most other purposes, a T61/p will do just fine.

My intentions for this system is to max out the specs and use it as my school/college laptop. Do you have any suggestions for the future upgrades to this system?

A T70 board will also fit, giving you a Core i7 QC if you are really THAT attached to that machine. T70 mobos are almost exclusively put in 15" models bevause of their highly superior screen options, but do what you wish. A X220 could in theory be jerry rigged in but it would require insane amounts of work, and its totally impractical.

Remember, this is still a 10+ yo machine. For college, I recommend get a X220. Its lighter, you can get batteries for it and its lighter. The T60 will be a burden on you.

You're better off picking up a newer machine. Anything from *20 series will be inexpensive nowadays and offer a much better performance than a T61/p.

Extremely. You may want to start searching the forum since all of these topics have been discussed dozens of times.

Here's the long and the short of it: a T61/p board is a drop-in replacement, upgrading the system to the max will be expensive due to its use of DDR 2 RAM. You're better off with a X220/T420/s depending on your preferred size, all of which will be lighter and offer a superior battery life.
