SSD guide for T60P

#1 Post by MichaelS » Sun Dec 10, 2017 7:27 pm

I've probably missed it, but where can I find instructions for configuring my T60P for an SSD?

Any recommendations on current SSDs? I'm looking for a reliable 500GB SSD in the $150 range.

Also, does the Middleton BIOS upgrade work for a T60P to enable SATA II speeds? And if so, where can I find it?

Many thanks.

Middletons is for Santa Rosa T61, X61, and R61 only. Best T60's system board can get is the Zender's BIOS or equivalent no-whitelist BIOS for the WLAN and WWAN. T60 chipset is perpetually limited to SATA 1.

You can also "Frankenpad" the T60 with a 4:3 T61 systemboard, then you can put the Middletons BIOS on that!

I bought a "New" Micron 512GB SSD for $129 on eBay, using it in my T500.

There are no special recommendations about configuring SSD, just enable AHCI SATA mode in BIOS. You can use SATAI due to chipset limitations, ICH7M Southbridge doesn't support SATAII.
I don't know what SSD to recommend, Russian 3dnews site have reliability tests for a big amount of 256GB range SSDs. This can help in choosing right SSD.

I've been using Crucial BX100 SSD and a few old crappy Intel X25-M Sandforce drives for the last five years. The Crucial drives seem good and perform well.

I've been using Crucial's drives for the last half-dozen years too and they have all been serving me well. I seek out MLC when it's in my budget, but avoid TLC and Sandforce. I haven't had issues with 3D-NAND so far but my experience with it has been relatively limited. Time shall tell...

I am currently using a Toshiba Q300 and an ADATA SP550 on both my Signature's machines. Both drives can cope with T60's improved perfromance, limited to SATA-I speeds. Even if you have not updated your BIOS in a while (more on that in another post), the SSD will be detected and I/O'd right away, no drama there.

What OS? If it's Linux based on systemd then activate the fstrim timer service & change the io scheduler to noop via configuring grub.
