T61p laggy videos

#1 Post by wujstefan » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:08 am

Hello,

I have quite a problem with my T61/p; when it comes to watching any video via browser. The system has no problems running fullhd videos as long as it's downloaded, runs SolidWorks 2017 well, play games like Civilization 5 smoothly, but for some reason I just can't watch videos on the browser, even in 720p. They are laggy, very laggy or SUPER-laggy, and always. Using Google Chrome and Firefox. Occasionally I also get a kernell drivers failure, my LCD blinks and then turns back normal.

I'm going to try out some lightweight browsers (Lunascape, Midori, IceDragon), but have concerns about video drivers. What do you think? And what kind of lightweight browsers do you use?

My specs:
X9100@3,06GHz
8 gigs of RAM
fx570m
240Gb SSD
UXGA
W7 pro

Try disable hardware acceleration.

Try disable hardware acceleration.
Tried to disable this one via windows properties, but it was deactivated.
So I have added a DWORD in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\Avalon.Graphics "DisableHWAcceleration" and set it to "1". No effect.

EDIT: also tried some lighter browser, but with no success as well.

Try IE11, I don't know why but the CPU utilization has gone way down as compared
to 3-5 years ago. Also, obviously check your wifi and internet speed. Have you
tried it with a hardware LAN connection?
Are you sure that it is not downloading updates?
What is the CPU utilization with nothing running just the Win desktop?

I have an X9000 without any overclock and I see 3-20% CPU utilization playing a 720p
video on youtube. Put your power plan into High Performance as an experiment.
There is something wrong, C2D is fine streaming.

Swap wifi cards and make sure driver for this is updated. I like intel 5300 or AR9380 (driver is most up to date than intel's) if using white list disabled bios.

If on lan, I can not help with you on this one except for motherboard swap or seek latest driver if possible. Otherwise still choked by C2D/C2Q technology.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Well, both are a no-go.

I tested it in the most simple way - turned on a video on youtube on my X61 w/X3100 and T9300. 720p video jumps on without a single lag, same athreos 9380, same place in my house, same wireless power, lower overall power.

I posted this to another group:
Attached is a snap shot showing HD decoding IE11 on a C2D laptop, no dropped frames, 5% CPU
utilization. It is a T9300 at 2.5 GHz and there are many 2.8 to 3 GHz C2D. This is the Santa
Rosa chipset, the Montevina is even better with faster processors and FSB: See attached.
I should mention that the utilization settles down to very low numbers, at startup
and scene changes, even just moving task manage causes it to jump up, as would
be expected.

Videos played in the browser using Flash/HTML5 containers are always, for whatever reasons, heavier on the CPU than the same videos downloaded and played through an offline player. I never investigated why, but the difference is consistent. That's why software like Minitube exists.

OK, it works now.

Updated nVidia drivers to 8600gt equivalent, installed some extra codecs, disabled hardware optimalization both globally and locally (browser). Now 1080p video is not a problem.

I am interested in how you got the X9100 working in the T61P, I've tried, but failed to get it to boot with one installed despite having a custom BIOS with the microcodes added.

It requires a FSB-mod to pump the machine up to a 1066MHz FSB.
