X61T SXGA+ IPS Panel into 14" T60?

#1 Post by mochiman123 » Mon Dec 11, 2017 7:23 pm

I'm interested in swapping a 12" X61T IPS HV121P01-100 or HV121P01-101 panel into my 14" T60. I know that the panel would be slightly smaller than the frame but I think I can get it to fit in. Is this in any way plausible? What kind of conversions would I need make in order to connect it to the motherboard? Thanks.

Ummm...why? What is wrong with the SXGA+ panel that is in there. That has never been done and will never be done because it requires a ludicrous amount of work for little payoff. Get a frankenpad with a UXGA or QXGA display instead.

FYI: It would like like this

Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

I know it would look like that but it's also my only choice for having an IPS 14" T60. I would use the 15" T60 but it's significantly heavier and I like a little bit of portability. I'm trying to judge how plausible it is.

It's about as plausible as a Mythbusters plausible.

If you add 'bout 500% the work and money required to do it the proper way, it will work, but it will still not be as good.

I have experienced using a 12.5" for a friend's and have number of 11.6 and 13.3", I consider this reasonable enough for portability and weight bit better. I do have 3 14.1" notebooks (thinkpad usually) and find it too limiting and bit heavy for only about a inch larger (what a hoot) where 15.4/15.6 will do and usually can handle quad processor better starting with sandy bridge and later.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Sorry, you're saying you've been able to successfully transplanted a screen before? Or are you suggesting the 15.4/15.6 inch thinkpads to me? I just want to do this for the 4:3 aspect ratio.

A major issue is connector and pinout compatibility: the X61T LCD panel has a 20-pin connector, while the T60 uses LCDs with a 30-pin connector. You need to fabricate an adapter cable to properly interface the two.

Another issue is how to mount the screen on the T60's larger lid.

And then you have to deal with the T60's LCD whitelist. :x

This will be a massive amount of work for no benefit. Why not use that panel in an X60/X61? Same power, but smaller and lighter. If you need an optical drive, get an ultrabase for it.

To fit the X6xt panel into the T60, you'd need not only to somehow fix the panel securely inside the bigger frame, you'd also need to convert the 2-channel LVDS signal from the T60 to 1-channel LVDS for the panel. Possible, but not feasible.

If you really want to do this kind of work, get the 13.5" 3:2 panel from the surface book. Same width but an inch less height. Easier to fit, less ugly and a real benefit screen quality and resolution wise.

Was that restricted to the T61? Not sure ATM.

I have a T70 mobo so the whitelist shouldn't be an issue. I really want this to work just for the 4:3 aspect ratio and power of a quad core i7. I never thought of using the surface book panel, but that's an interesting thought! Video cable conversion seems like it would be a large issue however...

I might 3D print a new lid or make some kind of filler for the space in order to secure the screen. The LCD panel connector conversion seems like it would be my biggest issue right now. Would fabricating an adapter be very complicated?

Why don't you get an actual X61T with IPS HV121P01-100 or HV121P01-101 panel
and configure it however you want? It will be smaller and better with a newer chipset.

He's installing a T70 into a T60. Another option is getting an X62, but if you already have a T70 then that's a big cost to pay.

The idea of fitting a small 12" display into a 14" shell is the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard. Not only is it not worth the trouble, but the outcome is so backwards. Might as well travel back to the 90's.

I can think of two possible reasons why he wants to do it:

1. He's trying to make use of what he has
2. There are no decent 14.1 4:3 screens
mochiman123 wrote:Would fabricating an adapter be very complicated?
1. The data lines use differential signals, which require either a micro coaxial cable, or two wires twisted together (twisted pair).
2. The wires used are quite small (AWG 32+), same with the connectors (0.5mm spacing IIRC)
3. IIRC the wires should all be the same length, due to the high signalling rate. Shielding is also an issue.

Okay, then it will be easier as you can switch to 1-channel LVDS output with a switch. But for such a beautiful machine, such an ugly hack doesn't seem appropriate...

Have you ever tried the QD14FL07? A plug&play 14" SXGA+ panel from a Dell with 1:450 contrast ratio and sRGB colours. Of course not IPS, that was never made in 14".

Sure it's UXGA?

The web says it's a XGA LCD.

If you exchange the X for an U you'll find the UXGA panel. By the way, there's a German saying "ein X für ein U vormachen" (trick someone into believing there's an X where a U should be), meaning to bluff :D

However, it's extremely rare (I'm searching for it for quite a while now and only found a single one in a year, that unfortunately broke during delivery) and apart from the resolution it is mediocre. Bad colours, Bad contrast, bad viewing angle, bad brightness. Someone on this or the German forum called it the worst panel he ever saw, apart from the resolution. I guess that's not what the OP is looking for when he's considering to use an IPS screen of smaller size. If you're looking for IPS image quality in 14" 4:3, the QD14FL07 I mentioned above is probably the closest you will come.

There is no advantage to putting the 12.1'' into the 14'' shell. You can build an X61 with practically all the same specs.

If you want a 14 inch model, then there are some decent 14 inch SXGA+ panels. Yes not IPS, but still pretty darn good.
