ThinkPad Enterprise Wireless Display Adapter - US

#1 Post by E350 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 8:34 am

Will this ThinkPad Enterprise Wireless Display Adapter - US allow our T61p laptops to project video to another screen in the network?

https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/accessori ... /p/0C52866

The Tech Specs for the adapter say this:

"VGA-in for backwards support legacy laptops
VGA-out to support projector, or HDMI-out to support TV/projector"

You need a WiDi-compatible laptop and a Wi-Di compatible monitor to use it wirelessly. Otherwise it's just a video converter. What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Current: Thinkpad 25 (20K7), Yoga 14 (20FY), X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, T60 1952-F76, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

I have music videos on my X61. I can play my X61 music videos by using playing them with the T61p which has a dock which has a DVI output to which I have plugged in a DVI to HDMI adapter to the tv and use the 3.5mm audio jack from the T61p to the stereo. But this requires wires.

I can play audio only from either the X61 or the T61p via bluetooth to this devise plugged into the stereo.

But no video.

For a while I could use the Samsung smart tv to search the network and get into the music video folder on the X61 and play the videos with the Samsung. But then samsung upgraded the firmware (automatically) and it no longer works. (I am supposed to call them or chat with them this weekend about this issue.)

So, if your SmartTV supports WiDi/Miracast, you can probably use this Enterprise Wireless Display Adapter, by connecting it to the laptop's VGA, and then transmitting wirelessly to the TV.

dr_st: Thank you for your review of the adapter's specs. That was my suspicion based on the spec's statement:

"VGA-in for backwards support legacy laptops"

So I will order it now, try it, and report back.

Check this out. Lenovo has free returns with no restocking fee for orders made before January 15, 2018. So, ordering it and trying it seems to be a no risk proposition. And because I ordered it through Lenovo Chat, Lenovo reduced the price to $103.99

Your Order Summary
Item: ThinkPad Enterprise Wireless Display Adapter-US
Part No: 0C52866
Sub total: $103.99
Tax: $8.06
CouponSaved: $26.00
Total: $112.05

Setback: According to Samsung Chat yesterday, no Samsung tv supports Miracast. So the Thinkpad Enterprise Wireless Display Adapter is going back for return...
