Upgrading from a 1952 to a 2007 Planar (And the learning it brought...)

#1 Post by JGTC.co.jp » Sat Dec 30, 2017 10:32 am

Hello everyone!

This is my first post in quite a while. I wanted you to know that, after a long hiatus, I finally completed my original T60 upgrade project (switching from integrated to discrete graphics) after sourcing a good 41W1364 planar that I am using to write this.

Alright, intro bit done, let’s attempt to summarise what was carried out:

-Source system: Signature’s 1952-B68
-Original Target system: 2623-D6U Planar (broken from everywhere you would look at it)
-Final Target system: 2007-46S Planar (as the previous one, a 41W1364 –a working one!-)
-Steps taken:
-Planar disassembly for both donors (2623 was a sort of an incomplete machine, 2007 was a broken bottom cover, a magnesium frame, the planar and external boards in frame)
-Planar assembly on 2623 frame of 2007 donor
-Half-assembly of LCD, test processor (T1300) and keyboard connection (no screw-in)
-General check-up on BIOS information, booting Linux and Windows OSs (all of them live)
-Going back and forth with Processor and memory swaps (BIOS was not updated, so I stuck with the T1300 for a bit)
-BIOS Update 1 with Lenovo’s original 2.27 bootable CD
-BIOS Update 2 with a no-whitelist bootable CD of 2.27
-Final swap-in of 1952’s T7200 and 3G of RAM
-Final missing devices’ connection (HDD, ODD, top covers…)
-Final BIOS tweaks and OSs on HDD bootups
-Driver updates for Windows 8.1 (Display Adapter, Touchpad -Windows Update UltraNav offering-) and Linux (radeon binary firmware)
-Final outcome: a pretty stable machine, with lots and lots of power and happiness to give(!)
-Time employed: about 5-6h
-Overall satisfaction: Greatly satisfied!

Feel free to post anything you might want to know or point at. Also, any improvement points you might think of (narrowing down to not much) are highly appreciated.

Happy New Year!
