t61 , r61 and a Core Duo t8300 ..which is reported as T7250 on a t61 ..and not working on a r61 w/middleton bios..
t61 , r61 and a Core Duo t8300 ..which is reported as T7250 on a t61 ..and not working on a r61 w/middleton bios..
Good day. I opened a working HP laptop (with cracked screen) to extract any useful hardware, among other perfectly working things I found a core duo t8300 .....
, which
- i tried on an r61 w/middleton bios : with NO screen (no signs of life)
- then I tried it on a t61 and its reported (by windows 10pro) as a t7250@2ghz
The cpu was working flawlessly on the previous machine ( before the screen cracked at least ), and is a genuine intel marked t8300 cpu
I'm not a super expert but.......any idea?

Well, Middletoning R61 is a bit specific. Are you sure you've installed middleton on this one?
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

I run cpu-Z and it report correctly ... ( t8300 2.4Ghz 800fsb 3MB ).. it's just Windows10Pro that reports it is another chip ( reports an Intel core duo with lower specs , a T7250 )
but I just noticed temperature on the chip have very wild swings , they seem to go from 30 40 to 60 70 in no time, like instant peaks of temperature ; with normal operations ; they also can return quite fast back to 40 , with the help of the fan or not.
With memtest cpu temerature reached 93 then was stable at 84-87 with cpu-fan at max speed
The system also shut down himself while booting up once, there was the Windows loading logo still and the fan was not working still

I assume so as the Fn-Ctrl button function are swapped
/nevertheless this R61 runs Windows Vista ; should I check in the bios / something more ..?
I have other Thinkpads, but at moment these 2 are the only I can use for testing hardware

Check if the heatsink is mounted properly.boodi wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2018 4:33 amI run cpu-Z and it report correctly ... ( t8300 2.4Ghz 800fsb 3MB ).. it's just Windows10Pro that reports it is another chip ( reports an Intel core duo with lower specs , a T7250 )

I removed and reinstalled the heatsink ..mind that on the gm965 chipset there is no thermal pad, just thermal paste, that I cleaned and reapplied on both cips.
I turned it on without reassemble touchpad and upper lids; on normal operations I can definitely see wild swings of reported cpu temperature in TPFC which I wouldn expect (normally i dont expect and see often higher temperature then 70 or so on t61thinkpads /core due , in this case they appear (randomly?) and can go well over reaching 90
Then the temperature go back to maybe 40 ..sometimes it happens in nearly no time
With the pc on, the back of my hand says that the heatsink over the cpu zone is not very hot...not that hot at least.
Instead the gm965 zone seems hotter.
ps the t8300 on the Thinnkpad R61 doesnt even power on.

it's possible the cpu is a chinese knockoff. Try installing a known good cpu.
the fake chips from china look perfect, even fooled the us military who bought $millions of them and didn't notice until they started failing.

It's also possible that Windows got it wrong.
