T-61 won't boot on battery

#1 Post by cmarti » Sun Jan 21, 2018 11:22 am

Hi all,

I am back after a long hiatus :)

Bought this T61 and fell in love with it, I installed an SSD drive and windows 10 and everything works normally aside from what I thought was a bad old battery. I went ahead and bought a new fresh one off Amazon which came 76% charged I plugged it in and tried to boot. No joy, not a sign of life. I then go back to connecting the power supply and all works perfectly and windows says it's charging, I then disconnected the power plug and the laptop turned off, like there is no battery connected.

Tried the search feature on this site and Google but can't find anything. I assume a bad fuse is the problem, but why it's charging but not powering on?

Any help would be appreciated, I have a work related trip tomorrow and would love to take the T61 with me :D

Regards,
Carlos

Is your new battery an OEM or a "generic" Aftermarket? That could be the problem, aftermarket batteries are not known for their reliability.

It's generic but has the highest positive feedback on Amazon.

This is the battery I got: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013S ... UTF8&psc=1

Same happened here to me few hours ago, ours batteries are probably dead, I bought a new one from subtel, if you want I can make you a review this week (subtel sell batteries with 3years warranty)

You also think that the new battery I bought is defective? It now says 100% fully charged (Windows 10 battery icon)

To conclusively test that you'd need another Thinkpad or another battery.

Doesn't work with the old battery either, but on that one says 'not charging'. Ugh!

Good to see you back here, cmarti ... :thumbs-UP:

I would agree with "another ThinkPad" suggestion as stated above. Now, if that's impractical...

1) When you insert the "old" battery, and just boot to BIOS, what does the battery charging indicator do? Flash fast yellow?

2) The same question for the "new" battery.

Yes because I plugged my T450 battery and my T60 was able to boot. Also W10 battery should say 100%, but if you are using a battery with 99% of wear use 1% of charge is now 100% of charge for windows, try another software to check your battery.

Methinks that everybody should have a battery extension cable, such as I describe here: viewtopic.php?p=726465#p726465
