T60p Noisy Fan - Suggestions For Solutions

#1 Post by Thinkpads4Life » Fri Jan 26, 2018 9:13 pm

Hi,

I'm facing an issue with my fan rattling under heavy use and need suggestions as to whether I should just replace it outright or is there some kind of patch I can do to quiet it down. Trust me, it's ridiculously loud.

I can upload a sound sample at request (if you'd like).

Thanks!

~ TPFL

Try lubricating the fan first.

I recently got a ThinkPad T60, and it works fine, but the fan makes this rattling/grinding noise: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0LP3zLJahOL
If your fan makes a similar noise, we have the same problem.

I'm not too worried about it because it stops after a while, so it's cooling down the computer enough. I took the computer apart to see if the fan was not mounted correctly, but it was. After looking up various things online I realized the bearings are worn out.

I'll get some lubricant oil like mineral oil or sewing machine oil, since stuff like WD-40 is not good enough (it needs to be thick), and then I'll try lubricating as these guides show: viewtopic.php?f=29&t=87448 and http://www.msb0b.com/archive/thinkpadt60fanrepair

I'm aware it's a temporary solution, but if this doesn't help at all, the only solution is to buy a new fan from somewhere like eBay.

Even if you buy a new fan, I recommend that it be lubricated. They were new many years ago. On one machine, I received a fan error within a week after the replacement. At the second in a month. It was an genuine and new heatsink, and various sellers. :?

I _STRONGLY_ recommend lubricating the fan with silicone oil (in spray).

If you need a genuine fan, PM me. I'm in Europe as well, shipping will be pretty cheap and fast.

I did it! I found Castrol Edge 5W-40 motor oil in my garage (it was all I had on hand) and used it to lubricate my T60's fan.

I took apart the computer using the hardware maintenance manual for my type T60 (type 2008) and took apart the fan as the msb0b guide showed. I used a syringe with a needle to put one single drop of oil in the bearing, put the fan blades back on, and spun them a little bit with my finger (it was already moving more freely).

Then I put everything back together, turned it on, let it run for a bit (because the fan isn't on all the time), and this is how it sounds now: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0CyD7s7Mhto I can't believe one drop was all it took!

One drop (sometimes, even less) is all you need. :D
