T61p with Windows 10 and Intel Turbo Memory possible?

#1 Post by whc » Mon May 14, 2018 6:34 am

Just the other day I found a T61p at a good price (11 USD). Alredy came with Windows 10 installed, I did clean Windows 10 install and have several drivers not installing, one is the Intel Turbo Memory, I tried the Windows 7 driver, it installed fine, then reebooted and now it will not boot into Windows 10, just on the boot screen forever, nothing happening.

My question is, should I completely forget about using Intel Turbo Memory in Windows 10? If so how to disable it, should I take out the Memory device from the unit? Device manager shows it as uninstalled, can I get rid of that and completely disable it? Cannot find anything about this in the bios?

Forget about it. Just remove the device from its slot.

Turbo memory was used with only with MS Vista. Remove it from the machine, it is just creating heat and using energy.

Turbo memory was a stop gap tech with the intended purpose of speeding up HDD usage in Vista and Win 7. With the popularity of SSDs, Turbo memory was redundant and slower than a SSD so even Intel dropped it. I found at best it was buggy and did nothing. At worst it causes system crashes in Win 7 and uses more battery. So I removed the card and never looked back.

By the time the win7 driver package arrived in which robson modules worked well [for what they had been designed for] it had been overtaken by 4GB RAM as standard and the arrival of SSD with which you should disable/remove cache modules like robson.

Robson only worked well on RAM starved machines with slower HDD and then only the larger sizes available at the end. This allowed the ReadyBoost feature to preload modules to enable a quicker windows load/startup. It wasn't a general purpose hw cache, it was tied to Readyboost. The vista version of ReadyBoost was pants but the Win7 did work but it's window had passed.

Intel/MS couldn't see that but many OEM could even at Vista launch so didn't ship the Robson tech.

Thanks for the reply all, I removed the Turbo Memory from my mashine, and it started right up (would not boot with the driver installed on Windows 10).

Guess I cannot just replace with msata pci-e ssd? Or should I just go with standard 2.5" ssd?

I've only heard of ppl putting USB mouse dongles via adapter or SD card adapters into that slot.

mSATA is supported only on the xx20 and xx30 generations -- T420/430, T520/530, X220/230 W520/530.

Msata and turbo memory are completely different. Msata was great works like a SSD and just as fast. As stated above, msata only existed with Sandybridge and Ivybridge generation of Intel CPU/chipset. Msata has been replaced by M.2. Personally I wouldn't bother with a SD card via an adapter as it's not much better than a HDD speed wise.

In that slot the i/o on a standard SD card formatted with a safe fs would be less than a HDD.
