T61 14.1" Charging takes +3hours on 65W. What is the maximum modern charger ?

#1 Post by 123434 » Thu May 17, 2018 12:03 am

Hello
T61 14.1"(2008) Widescreen's charging takes +3hours on 65W.
What is the maximum W genuine Lenovo modern charger ?
Is it the 20V 90W or is there a bigger wattage modern Lenovo charger available ?

For example I bought a new Dell charger 130W to a Dell M65(2006) which had also 65W charger.

The 'standard' stronger charger for that series is the 20V/90W, which would be the recommended one for your T61.
Next one up: 20V/135W as e.g. used for W520, already 'overkill' for a T61.
Next one up: 20V/170W as e.g. used for W530, huge, has a different DC-plug, is not worth it for your T61.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
Lenovo: X240, X250, T440p, T480, M900 Tiny.

Thanks. I think bigger W is more future proof and usable.
Does the T61 laptop limit the usable wattage to max.90W and excess W is kind of "reserve" ?

Is there a list of different charger variations ? For example in ebay there are different variations for 90W newer and older designs.

The 'newer' 90W you may see on ebay is probably the rectangular connector introduced in 2013 Haswell models like my T440p which came with 135W PSU.
There are adapter dongles to use the older PSUs with newer Thinkpads but I haven't seen anything to do the reverse.

The pre-T60 adapters were 16V 35W/56W/72W IIRC.

Pretty sure most laptops normally use well under the power provided by their original PSU; any excess basically lets you charge battery faster. Most of the laptops with 135W+ PSUs should run fine on 90W PSUs but won't get much battery charging while powered on. Dell 17" Precisions seem to run fine on Dell's 130W PSU even though they come with 210W or 240W.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (FHD), T440p (FHD),
T480 (QHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700, 7730, XPS 13
Daily driver: MS Surface Pro 7 (i7)

Please stick to 20V/90W Lenovo chargers. Charging time-characteristic is defined in laptops/battery firmware so in your case using power adapter with higher wattage output does not make any sense.

I got some of these adapters:

All these older laptop simply do not have fast charging. It's not an issue of adapter power but rather battery technology and charging circuitry.

My W520 came with a US 170W supply, it weighted actually less than the European 135W supply that came with the T530.

If you de-key the 170W adapter it is recognized by the T61 as a 120W adapter.

My Thinkpad (W520) does nothing with attached 90W adapter if on. It just drains the battery. It will charge on the 90W adapter when in sleep, hibernate of off.

I came across a Haswell-based Dell laptop recently that on battery was faster than with attached underpowered adapter. Getting the right adapter solved that.

I just got a few of these a week ago(just barrel to square) and they are the greatest thing ever! Now I can charge my T520 and myT450 from the same brick.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.
