T61 CPU Compatibility by production date

#1 Post by sestulak » Thu May 17, 2018 1:26 pm

So i´m thinking about buying used T61 with T7500 (merom CPU) and i´m not sure about the upgradability in this particular piece because its configure-to-order (so there is no way for me to check the specs of it) but the production date on the bottom is 08/07 so is it compatibe with those Penryn CPUs?

You can use a Penryn CPU in any T61 by simply installing Middleton's BIOS. I'd install Middleton BIOS in all my T61 X61 anyways. I'd be more concern about Nvidia GPU issues.

In general, the highest Penryn CPU that can be used without more complex CPU mods is the X9000 (extreme series). The computer takes 800MHz FSB, this is the thing to watch out for.

And repaste the heatsink while you are at it; computers run happier when kept cool.

As for software mods, I echo the sentiment about Middleton's and other modBIOS doing good work.
