T61 08/07 defected GPU

#1 Post by sestulak » Tue May 22, 2018 6:52 am

Cheers, so I´m thinking about buying second-hand T61 with production date 08/07 and it is Configure to order unity, so how likely is that it still has that bloody nVidia GPU with defect?
(Product ID: 7661ZZG, duno if Serial num is helpful...)

Thanks for your answers!

AFAIK only in 08/08 and later did they install revised nVidia chips.
OTOH, if that machine still runs fine after all these years, it may have been treated kindly.
As there is no MTM-info available, check if it might not have Intel X3100 graphics.

and 140NVS runs still in 2018.

If it did not fail yet, it is just as likely to fail as any 10-years-old system, no matter intel or nvidia GPU.

I own 4 units w/nvidia (T61, R61) and 6 with intel (X61, T61, R61) - and the last system that died in my hands was an intel R61. Motherboards for those are so darn cheap you should always keep one as a spare. Or five.

I have got a nVidia R61 from George aka ajkula lately; it's a 10-years old non-safe-date unit that is under pressure all day long, and it does just fine. Just load in either voltage lowering bios or install proper software (nVidia inspector?), and you will prolong the life of the chip. Or, invest $15-20 and get a second board ;)
