T61P with nVidia Quadro FX 570M - 1 long & 2 short beeps

#1 Post by CharlieFarlie » Sat Jun 09, 2018 7:33 am

Greetings all
My trusty T61P has started giving out the dreaded 1 long and 2 short beeps, indicating in all likelihood a failed nVidia GPU. It's a 6457-A26 with 15.4" WUXGA screen, so according to ThinkWiki it will have the nVidia Quadro FX 570M GPU fitted. It has a build date of 07/12 which I take to mean December 2007. Is it repairable or does the build date fall within the time frame when faulty GPUs were being made? I have seen a Youtube video showing a fix being effected by taking a hairdryer to the motherboard but would like to take advice on this before taking such a drastic step. Is the machine salvageable or is it time for it to go off for recycling? I'd like to hang on to it if at all possible as it represents (I believe) the final fling of the IBM-designed Thinkpads. Failing all else, does anyone have a suitable replacement mobo for sale?
TIA for your replies.

R.I.P. for the board.

These are very hard to get nowadays. Sitting on your chair I'd try to heat up the chip or apply some stable pressure on it. It may work for some time.

Getting a board from TuuS is another thing. I have found his boards work great for a couple of years now.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Hi guys.

Same story with my FX570M from 2010, so I guess there was no real fix.
I'm waiting for TuuS nvs140m board.
