Should I keep the 65w or 90w power source?

#1 Post by fefrie » Tue Jun 26, 2018 5:08 pm

I like the 65w for it's smaller form factor, but the 90w is more powerful of course.

Which is better? I'm assuming that the 90w is more efficient, less heat generating, and of course, more powerful.

I often do transcoding and do not run the laptop with a battery.

Keep both. The 90w is great for docking station and permanent home hook up. The 65w is great for travel as it is smaller even though it takes longer to charge. It's always nice to have a few power supply kicking around in case one fails or goes missing.

So the 65w is more than enough power to power the t60 at full cpu?

I already have another t60 with a 90w power source.

I used a 65w for either one of a T60, T61 or T500 while on the road. Besides noticing that it charges slower than a 90w, I've never noticed much difference between the two. More concern about other things besides charging efficiency. It charges and that's good enough for me. Very very seldom will I use any portable device at full CPU power, that's what desktops are for. I've purposely picked a 65w for the size and weight but don't expect it to perform like a 90w. You got both, take both on the road for a few weeks and find out what works best for you. I decided that keeping both around is handy. It's not like I can get a lot for one or the other anyways.

I have 2 t60's and a t500 and 2x 90 and 1x 65, so I have to get rid of one of the power sources when I sell off the T500

When buying Thinkpads or most any laptop I prefer the higher power power supply. Given a choice, as a buyer I would choose the 90w as it's more versatile.

I see, but for modern laptops 65W is enough. Docks may be ok with 90W
Modified T470 to look like TP Anniversary Edition; TP 25; E550; T540p; wants a T420 or P1 to see what's good.

I personally would use the 65W charger for travel and the 90W charger for a dock.
