Middleton's T61 T9500 stuck at 1197mhz

#1 Post by j-dogg » Sat Jul 07, 2018 7:11 am

So I built up a 15.4" T61, with 8gb RAM, SSD and T9500. I flashed Middleton's before the upgrade, that went well. Everything was fine but when I look in Speccy it's only showing a CPU speed of 1197mhz with a 6x multi. I've tried setting it to Max Performance in BIOS and none of the power settings will bump it to 2.6ghz, and the performance reflects this.

What did I do wrong?

There is nothing you did wrong, but it seems like something else is forcing your T9500 to run at 1.2GHz. Could you try to use Throttlestop to work around this problem? Force it to run at its maximum clock speed and see how it reacts.

That fixed it, i'm up to 2.6ghz now and the performance is night and day but the question remains, what is dropping it to 1.2ghz?

The only thing I can think, and Throttlestop covered this, I have a 3rd party battery and maybe it's having trouble charging, on the OEM Lenovo adapter, I just bought it and it charges hilariously slow. Anyone got a hook up on T61 9-cell batteries?

Really impressed with the T9500 performance, it's a big boost over the Merom 2ghz I had and it stays cool too.

You can try to buy T500 and R500 batteries. The FRU for the 41++ Panasonic 9 cell is 42T4620. I know these for the 6 cells too:

42T4621 - T500 6 Cell Sanyo 41+
42T4622 - T500 6 Cell Panasonic 41+

and

42T4620 - T500 9 Cell Panasonic 41++

Well something interesting happened, I dusted off my old T60 and dropped it in there and it charged up just fine. Now, if I put it back in the T61, the chip runs normal at 2.6ghz like it's supposed to but the battery will not charge, and if I plug it in and unplug it, Windows still thinks it's plugged in and charging. Very strange.

Very strange.
The charging fuse on the motherboard is most likely blown. It can be replaced, but the procedure requires proper testing with a multimeter and good soldering skills.

Of which I am overqualified for both, have a strong EE background and IPC certified. Where is this fuse located and where would I find a replacement? Seems like it would be a lot easier than buying another one and going through all the crap I went through to set this one up
